Phoenix Parks Hosting Open House to Discuss Echo Canyon Plans

http://phoenix.gov/news/092612echocanyon.html Sept. 26, 2012 Hikers interested in upcoming projects to improve the trail and parking lot at the Echo Canyon area of Camelback Mountain can attend an Open House on Oct. 1 to learn more about the upcoming work. The Open House will begin at 6 p.m. at Devonshire Senior Center, 2802 E. Devonshire Ave. Visitors to the open house will get to review the detailed plans for the trailhead expansion and concepts for upcoming trail renovation. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board in May approved a design for the trailhead that will increase the number of spaces at the Echo Canyon lot from 68 currently to 132. In addition to expanded parking, the project will add a roundabout on MacDonald Drive to slow traffic at the park entrance as well as walkways through the parking area to improve pedestrian access. During the lot construction, crews also will be renovating and re-routing the lower portion of the trail to eliminate erosion prone areas. Work on the projects will require closure of the parking area and trail for at least six months and is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2013. More information is available by phone at 602-261-8318 or online in the Trails and Preserves section of the department website at phoenix.gov/parks. City Announces Newest Business Partnership – Sewer and Water Line Repair

Sept. 20, 2012 Councilman Bill Gates and City Manager David Cavazos announced today that the city is participating in the National League of Cities Service Line Protection Program, provided by business partner Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA). SLWA offers residents optional sewer and water line warranties, covering sewer lines from the private property line to the connection to the home and water lines from the meter to the connection to the home. The first campaign is for sewer lines. The agreement with SLWA is part of the city’s Marketing Partnership Program, generating revenue for city programs and services, with no cost to the city. “This program is a win-win for residents and businesses,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “Plumbers from the Phoenix area will do the repairs, and residents have an easy solution to what can be an expensive problem.” The Service Line Protection Program was developed through the city’s Innovation and Efficiency efforts, which are nearing $50 million in savings and efficiencies. “This new program not only benefits residents, but also boosts city programs and services,” said Councilman Gates, who chairs the City Council Finance, Efficiency, Innovation & Sustainability Subcommittee. “The Service Line Protection program is another example of our city leading the way with innovative programs through business partners.” “Phoenix continues to look for a variety of ways to partner with businesses and help our residents,” said Cavazos. “The city will receive an estimated $400,000 from the program, just in the first year. That helps us provide crucial services like police, fire, parks, libraries and senior centers.” SLWA is mailing letters to Phoenix residents with program details. The cost for the sewer line program is $6 a month, and the company bills residents directly. Nearly 99% of homeowners filing claims have received free repairs or replacements. Other city partners include Atlanta, Milwaukee, San Diego, Kansas City and Avondale. “We are excited and proud to partner with the city of Phoenix,” said SLWA’s Brian Davis. “Phoenix has the most households of any of our city partners, and, by contracting with local plumbers, the program will provide great service to Phoenix homeowners at a low cost. Residents in our other partner cities have saved thousands of dollars on repair costs.” For more information or to enroll in the Service Line Protection Program, call SLWA at 1-866-922-9006, or visit slwofa.com. Overall, 130 cities are participating in the program. SLWA donated a one-year warranty to the Hill family, which hosted today’s news conference. The Hills also received home down-payment assistance through the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Stabilization Program. City Council established the Marketing Partnership program to identify and implement mutually beneficial business partnerships and generate revenue for city programs and services. The first partnership, a prescription drug discount card through Coast2CoastRx, has generated $124,000 and saved residents more than $5.6 million. The two partnerships will raise an estimated $500,000 this fiscal year. For more information, visit phoenix.gov/bizpartners. Phoenix, Maricopa County Announce Mortgage Help for Maricopa County Homebuyers

Sept. 18, 2012 Phoenix and Maricopa County homebuyers now can qualify for a 5 percent down payment assistance grant and a low, competitive mortgage rate through the Home in Five Advantage mortgage origination program issued by the Industrial Development Authorities (IDAs) of the City of Phoenix and Maricopa County. Homebuyers have access to 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage loans (FHA, VA or USDA-RD) that also provide a grant for down payment and closing cost assistance equal to 5 percent of the original loan amount throughout Maricopa County including the city of Phoenix. Special incentives will be given to qualified U.S. Military personnel and qualified veterans. “The Home in Five Advantage program provides mortgage loans at an attractive interest rate with a down payment assistance grant to families who might otherwise be unable to afford a home,” said Juan Salgado, executive director, Phoenix IDA. “For example, a homebuyer who received a $100,000 loan would receive a $5,000 grant to be used for down payment and closing costs.” “The largest barrier to home ownership many families face is lack of a down payment,” said Charles Thompson, president, Maricopa County IDA. “We want to continue our long-standing support and encouragement of home ownership by providing a way for families to achieve and afford the American Dream of owning their own home.” Income limitations for the Home in Five Advantage program include annual qualifying income that does not exceed $90,000. There are no income limits for qualified U.S. Military personnel and qualified veterans. In addition, Thompson noted that several factors contributed to the competitive mortgage rate achieved with 5 percent down payment assistance grants. “Our finance team developed an innovative structure which resulted in a very favorable mortgage rate,” he said. The IDAs of the City of Phoenix and Maricopa County have provided single family programs since 1980 and done so on a joint basis since 2000. More than 4,158 Phoenix and Maricopa County families have received in excess of $600 million in mortgage loans and approximately $30 million in down payment assistance grants through these joint programs since 2000. For more information about the program, contact the Maricopa County IDA Program Hotline at 602-506-7294 or the Phoenix IDA at 602-534-9655.
