July 23, 2014 The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for the greater Phoenix area from Wednesday, July 23 through Thursday, July 24. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach 114 degrees. Excessively hot temperatures can be stressful to animals and humans making it hard for the body to acclimate and remain hydrated. Heat exhaustion is a medical emergency. It can be preceded by heat cramps, or come on suddenly. People and pets are at risk if they must spend extended periods of time outdoors. Firefighters recommend that people increase their fluid intake and try to stay out of the sun in the heat of the day. Your loyal pets depend on you to keep them inside and in the shade with plenty of water. The pavement and air temperatures are painful and can be lethal.
