Phoenix Sister Cities' Ennis, Ireland Committee to Host Irish Book Festival

Sep. 23, 2015 ​The Ennis, Ireland Committee of Phoenix Sister Cities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and enhancing global connections, is hosting its first Irish Book Festival from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at the Irish Cultural Center & McClelland Library, located at 1106 North Central Avenue in Phoenix. The event will feature book signings, author readings, tours and an opportunity to meet the authors along with Irish musical performances and refreshments. Featured poets and writers at the event include: Thomas Kinsella – widely acknowledged as one of Irelands most important contemporary poets, with a long and distinguished body of work that began in the 1950’s and continues today. He is internationally known for his acclaimed translation of the Irish prose epic, Táin Bó Cúailnge which was published in 1969 as The Táin. David Baker – author of eleven books of poetry, most recently the Scavenger Loop and Never-Ending Birds, which was awarded the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize in 2011. Among his many awards are grants and prizes from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Mellon Foundation. Sara Berkeley Tolchin – one of a new generation of Irish poets whose work is informed both by her identity as an Irishwoman and also by her life in the world beyond Ireland. Sara has published poems, stories and a novel. She will be reading from her fifth and newest collection, What Just Happened. Cynthia Hogue – author of thirteen books including eight collections of poetry, most recently When the Water Came: Evacuees of Hurricane Katrina, Or Consequence and Revenance, which was listed as one of the 2014 “standout” books by the Academy of American Poets. Hogue has been honored as a Distinguished Visiting Writer at Cornell University and is a 2015 NEA Fellow in Translation, and directs the MFA program in English at Arizona State University. Dr. Adrienne Leavy – is from Dundalk, in County Louth, Ireland and immigrated to the United States. She has a Ph.D. in English Literature from Arizona State University and is the publisher of Reading Ireland: The Little Magazine, a quarterly e-journal that promotes Irish Literature and contemporary Irish writing. Yvonne Watterson – originally from Northern Ireland, she immigrated to the United States in 1988 and settled in Arizona where she has enjoyed a highly successful career in public education. A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, Yvonne has been recognized for her work not only in school reform but for her activism in immigration. Yvonne teaches Composition and Humanities courses at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona. She is also a contributing writer for IrishCentral.com. Irish music will include performances by De Mairt Ceol. Event tickets range from $20 for students to $45 for those who are not members of Phoenix Sister Cities. In addition, there will be a separate VIP Reception benefiting the Ennis Committee Book Festival on the evening of Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Country Club, located at 2901 N. 7th Street, Phoenix, 85014. The reception is an intimate evening with the book festival poets and authors and tickets are $100, which includes a buffet dinner, two drinks and complimentary or valet parking. Seating is limited.
