Housing Department Receives Grant to Help Youth Living in Public Housing Afford College

Dec. 12, 2016 The city of Phoenix Housing Department has been selected as one of nine housing authorities to receive a $452-thousand grant to help low-income youth and their families complete the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). “The future of Phoenix depends on the success of these kids,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “This investment gives students in public housing direct, personal help to put them on a higher education track. We know that when students fill out FAFSA they’re more likely to go to college and will earn hundreds of thousands more dollars over their lifetimes than those who don’t.” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will award the grant funding for the city to hire education navigators that will help guide public housing youth ages 15-20 and their families through the financial aid application process so that they can attend college or other post-secondary educational institution. “The hiring of education navigators to help prospective students through the financial aid application process will put them on the path to achieving the dream of a college degree and open the doors to better career opportunities,” said Councilwoman Laura Pastor, chair of the Parks, Arts, Education, and Equality Subcommittee. “This is truly exciting news for families taking part in public housing programs and services within our community.” The education navigators also will assist families and youth with financial literacy and college readiness, post-secondary program applications and post-acceptance assistance. The Department of Education estimates that those who earn a bachelor’s degree earn two-thirds more than those with only a high school diploma and are far less likely to face unemployment. This grant is part of the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) for Education Program – one of several HUD initiatives to increase access to federal financial aid for HUD-assisted families and students.
