Senator John McCain Visits USS John S. McCain in Vietnam
CAM RANH INTERNATIONAL PORT, Vietnam (NNS) – Senators John McCain III, Christopher Coons, and John Barrasso visited the forward-deployed Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) during a routine technical stop in Cam Ranh International Port, Vietnam, on June 2.
The Senators were piped aboard the ship as they walked through ceremonial sideboys, onto the quarterdeck, where the ship’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Alfredo J. Sanchez, greeted them.
After a brief reception in the ship’s wardroom, guests and crewmembers assembled on the flight deck where McCain and Sanchez both delivered formal remarks.
“I appreciate your service to our country,” said McCain. “People that I represent in Arizona, and that my colleagues represent in their states, and people all over America are grateful that you are here, far away from home, far away from your loved ones, representing the United States of America.”
Sanchez expressed his admiration for the crew’s hard work as well.
“It is a special moment when we can come together and devote the time to recognize the hard work and dedication of my Sailors who are the life and spirit of USS John S. McCain,” said Sanchez. “It is my Sailors’ professionalism and dedication to readiness that gives life to Big Bad John and embody Senator John McCain’s forefathers’ legacy.”
The USS John S. McCain was commissioned in 1994 and named after Sen. McCain’s father, John S. McCain, Jr. and Sen. McCain’s grandfather; John S. McCain, Sr. Both men were highly decorated naval officers who played prolific roles in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The two became the first father-son in naval history to attain the rank of admiral. Sailors refer to the ship as “Big Bad John” in reference to the fighting spirit of the ship’s namesakes.

Following his remarks, McCain re-enlisted the ship’s Sailor of the Year, Electronics Technician 2nd Class Michael Papapietro, from Blackwood, N.J., and promoted three officers to the rank of lieutenant.
“I could not be more honored for Senator McCain to personally reenlist me,” said Papapietro. “It’s quite a feeling to be sworn in by him, especially on the ship named for his family’s legacy.”
Once the ceremonies ended, the distinguished visitors shared lunch with the crew and toured the ship, giving Sailors the opportunity to highlight the various warfighting capabilities and living accommodations aboard.
“I’m glad we are given the opportunity to show off Big Bad John,” said Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class Matthew Burton. “It’s a joy to show off your work and to show pride in what you do and its nice the senators get to see what we are capable of.”
As the tour came to an end, the visitors and crewmembers took a moment to exchange small mementos and snapped a group photo in front of the ship’s 5-inch gun mount.
The USS John S. McCain’s technical stop in Cam Ranh International Port is a strong symbol of the positive trajectory of the U.S.-Vietnam comprehensive partnership.
Since the ship’s commissioning, the USS John S. McCain has played an active role in the Indo-Asia-Pacific. In 2016, the McCain and the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) became the first U.S. Navy vessels to visit Cam Ranh International Port since the port opened in March 2016.
The USS John S. McCain, assigned to destroyer squadron (DESRON) 15, is on patrol in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

STATEMENT BY SENATORS McCAIN, COONS & BARRASSO ON CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION VISIT TO VIETNAM
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Chris Coons (D-DE) and John Barrasso (R-WY) released the following statement today on their congressional delegation visit to Vietnam:
“Our visit to Vietnam came at an important time in light of troubling regional developments and rising challenges in the South China Sea. During our meetings with President Tran Dai Quang, Minister of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and other members of the National Assembly, the Government of Vietnam stressed its commitment to international law and maintaining a favorable balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region, and we explored ways to expand our security assistance and defense cooperation. We also discussed ways to grow our economic relations, deepen foreign investment, and overcome remaining barriers to trade including repealing the cumbersome and costly U.S. Department of Agriculture catfish inspection program and increasing U.S. beef and poultry exports.
“In addition, we spoke frankly about the importance of respecting human rights and encouraged the Government of Vietnam to uphold its international commitments to freedom of assembly and association. We emphasized that progress on this issue will help our relationship grow, and we hope the Government of Vietnam will release political prisoners such as Nguyen Van Dai.
“This was a particularly memorable visit as we had the opportunity to tour the USS John S. McCain while on a port call at Cam Ranh Bay. It is our hope that the presence of the USS John S. McCain, a ship named for Senator McCain’s grandfather and father who spent much of their naval careers in the Asia-Pacific, serves as a symbol of reconciliation between the United States and Vietnam and reminds our allies and adversaries of America’s enduring commitment in the region.
“It is noteworthy that at the same time as our visit, the Trump Administration announced its intention to deepen our comprehensive partnership with Vietnam following Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to the United States. Vietnam is an important partner with which the United States shares many strategic and economic interests, including expanding regional trade relationships and furthering our maritime security cooperation. Going forward, we hope that the United States will continue to expand our military-to-military ties with Vietnam and work more closely together to support the freedom of the seas and skies in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The progress we have made since the normalization of relations 22 years ago is remarkable. At the same time, there is much more we can do together as partners, and we need an ambitious agenda as we look to expand our cooperation and continue to work on remaining war legacy issues. We look forward to visiting Vietnam again soon and to further discussions on how we can continue to advance our strategic partnership.”

Solid Waste: Trash and recycling will be collected as usual. There will be no change in collection day. Please place your trash and recycling containers 4 feet apart at the curb by 5:30 a.m.

Transfer Stations: The 27th Avenue and North Gateway Transfer Stations will be closed.
