Maricopa Community Colleges Launch Program To Help Youth In Foster Care Finish College

Theo nguồn tin trên trang của phoenix.gov

TEMPE, AZ (PRWEB) JULY 27, 2015

The Maricopa Community Colleges today announced a new program that will help children who are aging out of the foster care system to get into and complete college.

The “Bridging Success Initiative,” funded by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, was introduced at an event today with partners from across the valley.

The initiative advisory board has representatives from Arizona State University (ASU), Children's Action Alliance, Arizona's Children Association, Arizona Friends of Foster Care, College Success Arizona, College Depot, Florence Crittendon, and the Arizona Department of Child Safety.

The program focuses on three key areas: retention, degree completion, and transfer. The Maricopa Community Colleges are creating supportive environments at all of their main campuses where students can get tutoring, academic counseling, career planning, skill development, and other support services.

Finishing a program usually leads to greater overall earning potential for youth in foster care. And through ASU’s similar “Bridging Success Program,” counselors who work with these youth will make the transfer go smoothly.

“Supporting youth who are aging out of foster care is core to our mission of access and student success,” said Dr. Felicia L. Ganther, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. “We are extremely committed to this work and are thankful to our community partners for helping us to create a web of support for these students.

Like other young people, youth in foster care have dreams. Yet we know that there are big challenges and obstacles in the way of these dreams. Our goal is to turn these dreams deferred, into dreams realized.”

Facts about Youth in Foster Care

· Every year, more than 700 Arizona children age out of foster care when they turn 18.

· One in four youth in foster care in the U.S. will finish a certificate or two-year degree.

· Nationally, only 3% of youth in foster care finish a four-year degree.

· More than 25% experience homelessness and/or prison.

· One in three receives public assistance, and their unemployment rate is more than 50%.

Maddy Day is Director of Outreach and Training at Western Michigan University’s Center for Fostering Success and was the event’s keynote speaker.

“With well staffed, campus-based support programs and supportive collaborations between the education and child welfare sectors, our students will not just survive their journey through the education to career pipeline. They will thrive,” said Day.

Expanding Access and Opportunity: The city of Phoenix Commemorates 25th ADA Anniversary

Theo nguồn tin trên trang của phoenix.gov

July 24, 2015 Sunday, July 26 marks 25 years since the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The city of Phoenix is marking the anniversary by highlighting its efforts to improve accessibility to be one of the most accessible cities in the nation. The city remains committed to eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities, focusing on equality, opportunity and independent-living for the functional needs community. “Protecting and expanding the rights of people with disabilities strengthens our entire city,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “That’s why Phoenix fully embraces the ADA, and why I will continue to make expanding access and job opportunities for members of the disabled community one of my highest priorities.” In Phoenix, nearly one out of every three people report having a disability and nationwide, that number is as high as 50 million. “The city of Phoenix is one of the most accessible city in the country,” said Peter Fischer, Phoenix’s first citywide ADA coordinator. “25 Years of the ADA has helped, but we are committed to doing more for employment, access to services, and inclusion.” Phoenix recently received the Trailblazer Award from the Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) for its outstanding contribution to individuals with disabilities. Some of those contributions include: New Accessibility Icon: Phoenix is the first city in Arizona to recently approve the new, more progressive International Symbol of Accessibility Icon symbolizing dynamic mobility and movement. Phoenix Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues: Comprised of 17 diverse volunteers appointed by the Mayor and City Council, the Commission advocates for disabled persons by identifying issues, and providing guidance for public and private businesses in Phoenix. Citywide ADA Coordinator: In 2013, Phoenix hired its first citywide ADA Coordinator, Peter Fischer, making disability awareness a priority. Sports & Fitness Center for Persons with Disabilities (SPOFIT): City contribution of $5.5 million to build the only universally accessible sports, recreation and fitness center offering competitive, recreational and therapeutic programs for the disabled community. Located at 5031 E. Washington St.; constructed in 2011. Lowered Height of Light Rail Fare Boxes: Over the next three years, the height of 62 fare vending machines will be lowered. The measure was recently prompted by Phoenix Councilmember Kate Gallego, after a local veteran in a mobility device asked for assistance in buying a transit pass. AZ Relay 7-1-1: Approximately 70% of city staff are trained in how to use this system to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, as well as people with speech disabilities. Phoenix’s Emergency Plan: The city is in the process of updating its emergency plan to provide sheltering, evacuation, transportation, and communication resources for the disabled community in the event of an emergency. Parks & Recreation: The department has implemented 25 ADA Projects since 2008, and 50 since 1999. For example, making trails more accessible for wheelchairs and conducting training for ranger staff on the use of service animals. The Judith Tunnell Accessible Trail, South Mountain Park: This barrier-free trail boasts two half-mile loops comprised of stabilized decomposed granite for smoother passage while exploring one of the largest municipal parks in the country. The trail also features interpretive signage, including Braille, for the visually impaired as well as a Bluetooth technology program called SightCompass which electronically describes the trail and its surroundings. The signage improvement project was led by local student and Eagle Scout, Noah Cress. Accessible Pools: Thirteen city pools are wheelchair accessible, including Telephone Pioneer which provides an ADA chair lift, wet ramp, stairs and a transition wall. The Legacy Golf Resort Upgrades Amenities with New Playground Equipment from APCPLAY

Phoenix’s Legacy Golf Resort adds new commercial playground equipment and pre-fab shade structure from APCPLAY for its members’ children.

PHOENIX, AZ (PRWEB) JULY 25, 2015

In order to provide their patrons with even better amenities, the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, AZ contacted the playground specialists at APCPLAY to assist in replacing their existing commercial playground equipment.

The Legacy Golf Club & Resort is located on a historical Spanish Colonial property that belonged to the Heard family of Phoenix dating back to 1903. It features 328 suites, an 18-hole championship golf course, pool and health club with an endless variety of recreational activities. The new playground equipment goes to make sure even the younger members of families who visit the resort have an activity they can enjoy.

The golf resort team chose APCPLAY to remove their existing playground components, and to provide and install the new playground equipment. They chose APCPLAY's "Cherry Valley" commercial play structure, two spring riders, and to cover it all with a large pre-fabricated shade structure.

The Cherry Valley play structure contains play activities with benefits that are essential to child development. There are four climbing activities to improve physical fitness, one of which is designed with letters and numbers to inspire kids to create their own learning games. Two exhilarating slides provide classic playground fun, and the play wheel allows for imaginative play. The structure is ADA accessible as well, to promote inclusive play. The playground is designed to entertain children ages 2 to 12 years old.

With the hot Phoenix sun, the Fabric Shade Structure was a must for ensuring children be able to not only enjoy themselves on the playground, but to do so without risk of UV exposure or heat exhaustion. With their purchase from APCPLAY, Legacy Golf Club management made sure that young children have more activities to enjoy while at the resort with their parents.

Nothing is worse than being without air conditioning in Phoenix during the summer. Do yourself a favor and get your AC checked before the summer arrives,” said Josh Kelly, partner at Parker & Sons. The Arizona summer is almost more dangerous than a war zone. If it’s not the 120 heat that gets you, it will be the dry climate which makes everyone privy to dehydration and heat exhaustion. Or perhaps a capricious monsoon storm will be your assailant. These storms appear without warning and are accompanied by dangerous deadly winds and dense heavy rain fall. Add dust grime and dirt and this whirlwind of an unpredictable storm can put you amidst a dire strait. Lastly, the summer is when Arizona’s most notorious wildlife makes an appearance. Cold blooded reptiles like rattle snakes love baking in the hot sweltering sun. Hiker be ever vigilant on the trail. But the most important summer survival tip is to gain perspective. Realize that the summer only lasts for about four months and the remaining eight months of Arizona’s climate are considered ideal by most. Remind yourself constantly that the scorching heat is only temporary and things will soon get better.
