Whether one is looking to walk, run, hike, bike or hit the gym, the city offers a long list of amenities and programming. There’s no better place to be on Monday nights than the FitPHX Meet Me Downtown Phoenix (MMDT) walk/run. More than 10,000 participants have enjoyed this free, social, non-competitive weekly event. MMDT takes place from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. every Monday night, and steps off from The Corner restaurant at CityScape Phoenix. The 3.2-mile route takes participants through three downtown parks and past numerous businesses, restaurants and landmarks. A weekly raffle includes restaurant gift certificates, vouchers for free Phoenix Symphony tickets through January and Phoenix Suns tickets twice a month. The neighborhood park could be a key asset to staying on the path to good health – and many residents can walk or bike there and leave the car at home. Walking is the No. 1 activity people use city parks for nationwide. Many of Phoenix’s more than 180 parks have concrete and/or granite paths where one can walk and enjoy nature. FitPHX has placed WalkPHX signs and mileage markers at 21 parks, giving walkers or joggers the ability to track their fitness progress. See a map and more information at phoenix.gov/fitphx – click the “WalkPHX” link. Hiking is another great choice, and Phoenix has 200-plus miles of trails in its desert and mountain preserves to explore. The trail system offers something for all interests and skill levels. It’s always important to bring plenty of water and a cell phone, and to dress appropriately. View trail locations and “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” safety tips. Prefer moving on two wheels? Safe bicycling options are available throughout the city, with dedicated bike lanes, paths and routes along canals. Visit phoenix.gov/fitphx and click on “Bicycling in Phoenix” for more information. Bikes also can be rented at one of nearly 40 locations through the city’s Grid Bike Share program – check out gridbikes.com for additional information. Parker & Sons Explores Ways to Cut Down on Heating Costs

Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng của prweb.com

PHOENIX, Dec. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Parker & Sons advises that there are better ways to stay warm during the winter than by cranking up the furnace. Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20151218/297246LOGO Parker & Sons notes that a few degrees can make a massive difference. Turning down the heater will have a direct correlation with savings. Homeowners can use the furnace as one of the many tools in their fight against plummeting temperatures. Parker & Sons states that a heater can be used to raise the home temperature to 68°F rather cheaply. Other techniques may then be used to provide additional warmth. Sealing drafts will not only cut down on the energy expenditure of the heating unit, but it will also help trap warm air inside the home, increasing comfort for an extended period of time. The United States Department of Energy has stated that individuals can save as much as 30 percent on their monthly energy bill simply by eliminating home drafts. In the battle against home drafts, caulking and weather stripping are a homeowner’s greatest ally. Parker & Sons reports that that data gathered by the Department of Energy shows that most drafts are generated by doors and windows. Parker & Sons is found of using incense to detect drafts around doors and windows. While being mindful that incense can be a fire hazard, homeowners can hold a lit stick of incense near a location they suspect of being drafty. Next they should keep their eyes on the smoke given off by the incense. If the smoke is whisked away quickly outdoors, than homeowners have identified the source of a draft. Weather stripping can be applied to seal it. “Drafts can absolutely devastate a home’s energy efficiency. Plus they can make you really cold! No one likes drafts. Everyone wants to get rid of them! If you are not confident address the drafts in your home, you should contact a home energy specialist. You will be warm and toasty and saving money in no time,” said Josh Kelly of Parker & Sons. New Degree Program Prepares Students for Careers in Sustainable Agriculture

Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng của prweb.com

MESA, AZ (PRWEB) DECEMBER 23, 2015 December 22, 2015 — Beginning with the spring 2016 semester Mesa Community College will offer an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Sustainable Agriculture, the first of its kind in Arizona. The Sustainable Agriculture degree will provide students with both the technical and small business skills needed to manage or develop a small farm or agricultural business. The program is focused on small scale and urban agriculture with an emphasis on natural practices and sustainability. Courses include Field Crop Production, Livestock Production, Aquaponics, Integrated Pest Management and Agricultural Marketing to name a few. This degree is different from the certificate and degree programs in Sustainable Food Systems in that students gain hands-on experience in sustainable agricultural practices in the classroom and a working urban farm at the Center for Urban Agriculture. Produce is sold at the MCC Farmer’s Market and the excess is given to local food banks. “In response to an explosion in consumer demand for locally grown food, many existing local farms are expanding and new ones are cropping up around the valley. Our goal is to prepare a highly skilled, trained workforce and new entrepreneurs for this growing field,” said Peter Conden, Director of MCC’s Urban Horticulture and Sustainable Agriculture programs. Conden is passionate about his work at the college and reports concerns about the origins of his own food, sustainability, managing resources, and pollution of the soil and groundwater. “Our program is based on organic and natural production methods,” he adds. Seed money for the program came from a 2014 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) education grant of $108,000 which included a 25-percent match from MCC. “With assistance from the EPA grant we were able to write new courses, rewrite old courses, purchase equipment, and put this new program together,” noted Conden. At the MCC Center for Urban Agriculture, students are able to take classes and receive hands-on, real life experience working on the college’s urban farm and greenhouse. Registration for the spring semester is open. Visit http://www.mesacc.edu/spring to sign up for classes. # # # Contacts Dawn Zimmer, 480-461-7892, dawn.zimmer(at)mesacc.edu Sally Mesarosh, 480-461-7283, sally.mesarosh(at)mesacc.edu Mesa Community College is nationally recognized for its service-learning, civic engagement and innovative educational programs, which include university transfer, career and technical, workforce development, and life-long learning.
