Food for the Hungry Helping Iraqi Christian Families Providing Shelter, Food and Other Help to Refugees Fleeing ISIS Terror

Food for the Hungry (FH) is giving shelter and other relief support to Iraqi Christian families and Syrians escaping violence from the terrorist group, Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Phoenix, Ariz (PRWEB) August 28, 2014

Food for the Hungry (FH) is giving shelter and other relief support to Iraqi Christian families and Syrians escaping violence from the terrorist group, Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). With international news coverage of ISIS beheading Christians in Iraq and many surrounding countries closing borders, Iraqi families are arriving in Lebanon—a country already taxed with Syrian refugees—in desperate need. Others are remaining in their country trying to seek safety.

FH is partnering with Lebanese Society for Educational and Social Development (LSESD) to help Ir aqi Christians and Syrians f leeing violence to find safety and shelter in their own countries and in Lebanon. “As ISIS controls further territory in Iraq, more than 1,500 Iraqi Christian families have sought refuge in Lebanon, and we are expecting more Iraqis to arrive,” staff reported.

Additionally, FH and LSESD are helping Christians and churches in northern Iraq positioned on the front line of suffering. FH and the LSESD are currently providing shelter, food, education and other help to approximately 7,000 Syrian families in Lebanon and Syria each month. As Iraqi Christian families arrive, LSESD is providing aid, but needs financial support for continuing to meet the numbers of people who need help.

“We have been called to provide for Christian Iraqi refugees in Lebanon, and we expect to have a growth in Iraqi refugees in the coming months,” says staff. “We do not know how we will be able to upscale our relief and aid program yet."

FH is raising funds and releasing the I Am Your Voice campaign on September 3, 2014, to increase awareness and funding for helping LSESD get resources to serve these Iraqi Christian families and Syrian refugees.

Founded in 1971, Food for the Hungry provides emergency relief and long-term development programs with operations in more than 20 countries to help the world's most vulnerable people. Learn more by visiting Social connections include and]]]]> ]]>

71-Year Old Retiree Completes 100th Stair Climb for Charity

71-year old man recently completed his 100th stair climb to raise funds for the American Lung Association.

Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) August 24, 2014

71-Year Old Retiree Completes 100th Stair Climb for Charity

Man Climbs and Fundraises for the American Lung Association

George Burnham reached an athletic milestone most fit 21-year olds wouldn’t dream of attempting. The 71-year old retired Phoenix electrical worker recently completed his 100th stair climb event in South Carolina, at the American Lung Association’s 2014 Fight for Air Climb Charleston. Since 1996 Burnham climbs about 200,000+ steps a year, traveling most weekends to charity fundraisers in some of the tallest skyscrapers in the country.

While others take elevators and sip cocktails at the top of Las Vegas’s Stratosphere Tower, Burnham has raced up the 108 floors and 1,455 steps of the iconic tower. The Scale the Strat Climb, also benefiting the American Lung Association, is one of his favorite stair climbs. For personal reasons, the Lung Association is one of his favorite charities. In 2014 alone Burnham has participated in Fight for Air Climbs in Atlanta; Bennington, VT; Boise, Charleston; Columbia, SC; Denver; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Miami; Minneapolis,; Oakbrook, IL; Portland, OR; Tulsa and Wichita.

“I’m a lifelong asthmatic,” Burnham says. “Before inhalers came on the market, I really struggled to breathe.” Staying fit and healthy has long been part of Burnham’s regimen for asthma control.

“I used to run up North Mountain in Phoenix, until I got older. In 1996 I switched and starting climbing buildings in Phoenix,” says Burnham. “Stair climbing is more strenuous than running, but it’s actually easier on your body.” In 2013 Burnham had bypass surgery, and with his doctor’s permission, restarted his climbing routine six weeks after surgery. “I wasn’t allowed to run up the steps for a while,” Burnham admits. “Recently my 46-year old daughter beat me at a Phoenix climb. Guess I’ll have to get used to it.”

The American Lung Association offers Fight for Air Climbs across the USA. Denver, CO climb to take place February 22, 2015. Information is at

Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) August 23, 2014

Save this date and save a life: October 27, 2014.

The Arizona Foundation for Women is doing something about it. Join Arizona Foundation for Women on October 27, 2014 at the Arizona Biltmore for "The Faces of Domestic Violence," a series of fundraising events demonstrating the importance of prevention, awareness, education, and advocacy. "Save this date and save a life: October 27, 2014. Tickets are on sale now, and we expect a sold out event! You won't want to miss this opportunity to make a difference to Arizona's women and children," states Sara Presler, CEO, of the Arizona Foundation for Women.

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive control where one partner controls uses their power to control the other partner. This can take the form of physical, financial, sexual, and emotional abuse. These abuses impact Arizona's women and children every single day. Young boys who experience domestic violence are twice as likely as their peers to commit domestic violence when they grow up to be adults. Domestic violence is one of the most underreported crimes in the United States and it is estimated that only 25% of these crimes are reported. Almost half of the perpetrators that commit intimate partner violence also abuse children in the home. We also know that 85% of victims of domestic violence are women.

Arizona Foundation for Women is doing something about these statistics and creating a better life for Arizona's women and children. AFW focuses on Safety, Health, and Economic Empowerment. We believe SHE Counts! Through research, grant making, and awareness events, we engage the public and serve Arizona's women and children. We invest in the most innovative programs that address the unmet needs of Arizona's women and children.
