Phoenix Passes Prop. 100, Approving The City's General Plan

Aug. 28, 2015 ​Propositon 100, the ballot measure that seeks the ratification of the 2015 Phoenix General Plan, was passed overwhelmingly by Phoenix voters. According to the unofficial results from the Phoenix City Clerk’s office, YES on Prop. 100 received 76.02 percent of the votes as of 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 27. “The General Plan Update is a collective vision of the future of Phoenix and the city we know we can be,” said Councilwoman Laura Pastor, chair of the General Plan campaign committee. “I was proud to lead the effort for its adoption and thank the Village Planning Committee members and countless residents who contributed thoughts, ideas and energy to its creation.” Pastor also credits the many hours, hard work and dedication the committee volunteers contributed to produce a plan that reflected the unique characteristics of every urban village. The Phoenix General Plan will provide direction for future developments, conservation and infrastructure investments in the city. Planning for a more diverse and flourishing city are at the core of the updated plan, designed to further enhance the quality of life for all Phoenix residents by focusing on five core values: Connecting people and places through transit-oriented development Strengthening the local economy by collaborating with existing partners in economic development and providing encouragement to local and small businesses Celebrating diverse communities by ensuring safe neighborhoods and supporting arts and culture Building a sustainable desert city by investing in “green” infrastructures, such as solar projects , and increasing canopy coverage throughout the city with trees and shade Creating a more vibrant downtown by investing in urban spaces that invite more people to live, work and play downtown “When Phoenix residents passed Prop.100, we took a huge step toward becoming a thriving, dynamic and connected city that will attract visitors and new residents and businesses,” said Councilwoman Kate Gallego, chair of the Phoenix City Council’s Neighborhoods, Housing and Development Subcommittee. “Thousands were involved in the general plan’s creation making it a true, collective and optimistic vision for the future of our city.” The Planning and Development Department is ready to move forward and implement the more detailed strategies of the General Plan. Arizona Man Completes Cross-Country Bike Ride After Anterior Hip Replacement from OrthoArizona – Arizona Orthopaedic Associates Surgeon

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (PRWEB) AUGUST 26, 2015 A Valley man recently completed a 3,400-mile cross country bicycle trip, defying his age with the help of a Phoenix orthopedic surgeon. For years, Scottsdale resident and avid cyclist Bob Mountz, 75, had dreamed of crossing the country on his bike. And for years, Mountz had struggled with arthritis that had been taking a toll on his left hip. Mountz found himself at OrthoArizona – Arizona Orthopaedic Associates to discuss joint replacement surgery with David M. Ott, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and president of the Phoenix-based practice. Itching to achieve his lifelong bucket list goal, Mountz left knowing it would be possible, thanks to a procedure called an anterior hip replacement. “As modern medicine progresses, individuals are able to lead healthier, more physically active lifestyles into their later years now more than ever,” Dr. Ott said. “Procedures like the anterior hip procedure help make this possible.” Dr. Ott, who specializes in arthroscopic and joint replacement surgery and has performed more than 800 anterior hip replacements, suggested the surgery – a less invasive approach that spares the muscles by navigating between natural tissue separation to replace the damaged joint. After undergoing the anterior hip replacement surgery, Mountz set his sights on successfully completing the 3,400-mile journey across the country. “The surgery was marvelous and the recovery was magnificent,” Mountz said. “After about six weeks, I was able to ride very well again and get back into training mode. I found that everything was working perfectly.” A little over a year later, Mountz was ready to tackle his dream. On May 10, 2015, he dipped the back wheel of his bike in the ocean water along the shores of Manhattan Beach, Calif., as the ride began. Seven weeks later, he completed the journey by treading into the water at Revere Beach in Boston. Mountz and a group of 17 or so other cyclists in the CrossRoads Cycling Adventures group covered 3,400 miles in the two-month period. For 49 days, they rode for 5 to 10 hours to cover up to 100 miles each day, stopping only to maintain the bikes, eat and rest. The terrain was tough, Mountz said, as the group was challenged at times to climb mountains and maneuver steep descents, but not once did he experience any problems with his hip. “You realize you’re not getting any younger, and when you dream of doing one of these things, it’s kind of on your mind until you get it done,” said Mountz, who was back on his back just weeks after the surgery. “I had always dreamt about making a complete crossing in one leap, so that’s exactly what I did.” Despite a few scrapes and bruises from a fall at the end of the ride, Mountz completed the endeavor injury free. “When I got back, I made an appointment with Dr. Ott,” Mountz said. “He said a lot of people don’t think they can do these types of things with a new hip. But, he did an x-ray of the surgery area and couldn’t find anything wrong at all. “My experience with Dr. Ott couldn’t have been better. Phoenix Voters Approve Comprehensive Transportation Plan

Aug. 26, 2015 According to unofficial results yesterday, Phoenix voters approved a proposed transportation plan as part of a citywide election. The plan, called Transportation 2050, was developed by a citizen-led committee of transportation experts and community advocates, and dramatically expands investment in Phoenix for bus service, light rail construction and street improvements. Elements of the plan include building an additional 42 miles of light rail throughout the city, providing late night bus and Dial-a-Ride service citywide, and repaving over 680 miles of arterial streets. The plan will be funded in part by a 7/10ths of a cent sales tax starting on Jan. 1, 2016. “Phoenix is expected to double in population over the next 30 years, and managing that growth responsibly required the City – and the voters – to make some important and far-reaching decisions,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “Now that we are making these critical investments in light rail, bus service, bike lanes and better roads, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Businesses looking to relocate or expand in Phoenix now know that our city is thinking ahead.” With approval of the plan, Phoenix residents have continued local support of transit service that has been in place since 2000. That year voters adopted Transit 2000, a transit plan that helped to build the Valley’s current light rail line, introduce RAPID commuter service, and expand the local bus network. “Transit 2000 was a far-sighted investment in Phoenix’s future, and what we needed to move Phoenix forward,” said Councilwoman Thelda Williams, chair of the city’s Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee. “With the passage of the new voter-approved plan, we continue looking ahead, working to improve our streets, invest in the kind of bike infrastructure families and their children can enjoy, and spur economic growth along new light rail corridors.” Connections to educational institutions are a key element of Transportation 2050. Light rail corridors will provide service to Grand Canyon University and ASU West, linking ASU and U of A campuses in downtown Phoenix on the Valley’s current 20-mile light rail line. “Transportation 2050 will allow Phoenix to attract and retain top talent and innovators, connect our education hubs to foster our brightest minds, and cultivate our economic growth,” said Phoenix Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela. “It’s an ‘all of the above’ transportation strategy that will enable our city to continue to thrive.” In addition to new light rail corridors, Transportation 2050 will build out the majority of the city’s bus service network, and introduce new bus rapid transit corridors along 24th Street, Baseline Road, Thomas Road, and elsewhere. Kohl's Hosts 3rd Annual Back to School Shop&Recycle Event, sponsored by American Textile Recycling Service

PHOENIX, AZ (PRWEB) AUGUST 21, 2015 As Back to School shopping season continues with tax free weekends, promotions and big discounts nationwide, the Val Vista location of Kohl’s has pledged a greener shopping experience for customers as they scoop up the latest trends and fall fashions. Kohl’s at Val Vista has joined the annual Shop&Recycle Campaign, sponsored by American Textile Recycling Service (ATRS), to provide easy, convenient drop off destinations for gently used, out of season, unwanted clothing, shoes and team wear while shopping for new gear. Shoppers at Kohl’s were encouraged to bring backpacks and other clothing donations to support children in residence at the Weldon House in Phoenix. Approximately 1000 shoppers stopped by to show support during a two-day clothing donation drive and to learn more about the partnership between ATRS, Kohl’s and the Weldon House. Over 500 lbs. of recyclables were donated by attendees and many gently used backpacks were collected for Back To School. Every pound of donations collected at Kohl’s was weighed and sorted by ATRS in its Phoenix facility and raised much-needed funds for the Weldon House. All the donated backpacks were given directly to children at Weldon House to help them prepare for their 2015 school year. “Several Weldon House mothers were on site throughout the two-day event and that’s what makes this promotion so special, says Debra Buckner, lead ATRS employee and longtime Phoenix resident. “Shoppers get to meet the women and children that benefit directly from their donations and really see beyond the bin. We are so proud of all the good we can do with help from our communities.” Sponsored by American Textile Recycling Service (ATRS), the annual campaign to Shop&Recycle aims to educate shoppers about the importance of recycling during one of the highest spending seasons of the year and shop sustainably in the communities where we all live, work, shop and play. Kohl’s ran a nationwide campaign for all shoppers who spent $50 or more in store were awarded $10 in Kohl’s Cash, this promotion in conjunction with the sustainability initiative of ATRS Recycling created an atmosphere of sustainability, social responsibility and savings for Shop&Recycle 2015. The Weldon House also received a $500 donation directly from the Kohl’s store to assist with their mission to to help women who faced barriers in leaving abusive relationships, sustaining recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism, obtaining adequate housing, and finding jobs that provided a livable wage.
