Phoenix Parks Hosting Open House to Discuss Echo Canyon Plans

http://phoenix.gov/news/092612echocanyon.html Sept. 26, 2012 Hikers interested in upcoming projects to improve the trail and parking lot at the Echo Canyon area of Camelback Mountain can attend an Open House on Oct. 1 to learn more about the upcoming work. The Open House will begin at 6 p.m. at Devonshire Senior Center, 2802 E. Devonshire Ave. Visitors to the open house will get to review the detailed plans for the trailhead expansion and concepts for upcoming trail renovation. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board in May approved a design for the trailhead that will increase the number of spaces at the Echo Canyon lot from 68 currently to 132. In addition to expanded parking, the project will add a roundabout on MacDonald Drive to slow traffic at the park entrance as well as walkways through the parking area to improve pedestrian access. During the lot construction, crews also will be renovating and re-routing the lower portion of the trail to eliminate erosion prone areas. Work on the projects will require closure of the parking area and trail for at least six months and is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2013. More information is available by phone at 602-261-8318 or online in the Trails and Preserves section of the department website at phoenix.gov/parks.
