June 18, 2014 The ninth annual Dump the Pump Day takes place on Thursday, June 19. This nationally recognized activity encourages residents to choose public transportation in lieu of driving their personal vehicles. This year’s slogan is “Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit.” As part of Dump the Pump elected officials Valley-wide are encouraging residents to choose transit. “Public transportation is part of what makes our city attractive for so many people. We’ve got multiple options available every day to help our residents get to work, school and shopping,” said Councilman Bill Gates, who will join transit users at the Dreamy Draw Park-and-Ride located on the southwest corner of Shea Boulevard near SR-51. Dump the Pump was created in 2006 in response to skyrocketing gas prices. According to AAA, average gas prices for Phoenix are currently $3.52 per gallon. Residents can determine how much they can save by choosing public transportation using a fuel calculator at publictransportation.org. A Valley Metro all-day transit pass is only $4 and can be used for both local bus and light rail. Those who want to experiment for an entire week can test the system for $20 with a 7-day transit pass. Participants can register online at valleymetro.org until 5 p.m. June 19, to submit a pledge form and be entered to win a local staycation package.
