Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) April 13, 2015
Following a period of large storms and heavy rainfalls, experts are predicting that one of the worst allergy seasons in recent memory will hit much of Arizona this spring as tree pollen fills the air.
According to New Jersey 101.5 (3/17/15), seasonal allergies affect a significant number of Americans each year, with more than 17.6 million adults and 6.6 million children being diagnosed with these allergies in the last year alone.
Terri Porter, Clinic Administrator at Phoenix urgent care clinic Doctors Express Phoenix, says she has already seen an influx of patients suffering from severe allergies this spring.
"We're already seeing an unusually high amount of patients due to allergy related symptoms," Porter says. "Arizona has many visitors in the early spring from states with colder climates, and enjoying our great weather makes it difficult to stay indoors. It is definitely going to be a severe allergy season in Phoenix."
Porter attributes this year's exceptional allergy season to the number of storms and heavy rainfalls that hit Arizona toward the end of winter.
"We have had several large storms and an higher-than-normal amount of rainfall which has caused an abundant growth of flowering plants, shrubs and trees," Porter says. "The trees are currently pollinating and the air is heavy with pollen dust. This is a nightmare for seasonal allergy sufferers."
According to Porter, signs of seasonal allergies range from minor symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, an itchy throat and sneezing to more severe symptoms like coughing, wheezing and trouble breathing. While mild symptoms can usually be treated with over-the-counter medications, Porter says it's important to seek medical care if you experience anything more severe.
"Allergies can bring on sinus pressure, pain and infections. Chest pressure and wheezing may also occur, making breathing difficult," she says. "Doctors Express can provide medications and breathing treatment to help open congested airways and reduce inflammation to the airway often caused by severe allergy attacks. Avoiding the outdoors during allergy seasons is also ideal to help reduce symptoms."
