April 23, 2015 To celebrate the Earth, Phoenix Public Works will be giving away free earth on Earth Day! Attendees of the Earth Day celebration in Phoenix on Saturday, April 25, can receive free bags of compost, enough to grow a potted plant. The compost is made up of green organics diverted from the landfill and processed at the city’s pilot composting facility at the 27th Avenue Transfer Station. The green organics—made up of tree branches, grass and leaves–were collected from residents currently participating in the city’s Green Organics Curbside Collection program. Aptly called the Reimagine Phoenix “Green Organics Mix,” the free compost has a carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio of 13:1 to 16:1. Phoenix residents interested in receiving more compost for their bigger gardening projects should stop by the Reimagine Phoenix trailer during the Earth Day celebration for more information. Phoenix will be participating in the 6th Annual Earth Day Phoenix from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at PHX Renews, 4221 N. Central Ave. The free event is being coordinated by Keep Phoenix Beautiful, a nonprofit affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. Attendees can expect booths from various exhibitors, mini eco-classes and even a beer garden with Sun Up Brewing Company and Brewhouse. This will be a zero-waste event, meaning everything will be recyclable or compostable. Attendees will also enjoy a steel drum band kicking off the event at 11 a.m. and a ceremonial tree planting with the Arizona Super Bowl team and NFL Environment at that time. Mayor Greg Stanton will pass the golden shovel to San Francisco for the next Super Bowl celebration. Food trucks and a Composting Basics 101 lesson will be available to residents. There will be giveaways and tours of the Solar Decathlon 2013 SHADE Exhibit Home as well.
