Sep. 9, 2015 Councilwoman Thelda Williams invites residents to celebrate the opening of Deem Hills Dog Park at Deem Hills Community Park, 51st Avenue and Deem Hills Parkway, Friday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Community members, staff from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and special guests will join the councilwoman. “There is an increasing need in the community for dog parks and it’s exciting to add one in the northwest Valley,” Councilwoman Williams said. “The positive impact our parks system has on the community continues to expand thanks to unique sites like this.” The new dog park is approximately two acres and features separate areas for large and small dogs. Amenities also include more than 30 shade trees, turf and decomposed granite surfaces, drinking fountains, LED lighting, concrete seating walls and painted fencing that blends in with the surrounding desert preserve land. The dog park complements the location’s existing 40-acre community park, which includes a playground, lighted soccer fields and basketball court, walking path and ramadas. The park borders the Deem Hills Recreation Area, which is part of the Sonoran Desert Preserve. Deem Hills is the city’s eighth dog park and the second one to open within the last month. The grand opening of Esteban Dog Park, 32nd Street and Roeser Road, was held Aug. 22. A new dog park at Cesar Chavez Park, 35th Avenue and Baseline Road, is scheduled to open in fall 2015.
