Oct. 16, 2015 High school sophomores or juniors residing in a Phoenix council district can apply to earn the experience of a lifetime as a Youth Ambassador. The Youth Ambassador Exchange Program, sponsored by Phoenix Sister Cities, offers young Phoenix residents an opportunity to learn firsthand about another culture through a reciprocal six-week summer exchange program. The deadline to apply for the program is Dec. 18, 2015 at 5 p.m. “This is a life changing experience for our youth that introduces them to different cultures and prepares them for the global society we live in,” said Phoenix Sister Cities President/CEO Paula West. Phoenix resident high school sophomores and juniors are selected based on their communication skills, maturity, flexibility, leadership and cultural inclusion. The students live with a host family in their designated sister cities for three weeks during the early summer and then open their home to their international counterpart when they visit Phoenix in July. The program is privately funded and no city tax dollars are used. Approximately 25 Phoenix high school students will be selected as Youth Ambassadors to travel in the summer of 2016 to Phoenix’s sister cities: Calgary, Canada; Catania, Italy; Chengdu, China; Ennis, Ireland; Grenoble, France; Hermosillo, Mexico; Himeji, Japan; Prague, Czech Republic; Ramat-Gan, Israel; and Taipei, Taiwan. Since 1988, more than 825 Phoenix students have participated in the Phoenix Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Exchange Program. The program is privately funded through fundraisers and family contributions. All applicants can apply for scholarships. Applications are available at www.phoenixsistercities.org and interested students can get a glimpse into the experiences of past ambassadors through the program’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/PhoenixYAEP.
