FitPHX and UA College of Medicine-Phoenix Celebrate Year Two of "Wildcat Night @ Verde Park"

Oct. 19, 2015 FitPHX and the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix are celebrating the second year of a vibrant partnership that engages medical students with the community. The monthly “Wildcat Night @ Verde Park” brings the medical students two blocks from campus to the park to teach youth about a variety of age-appropriate health-related topics. Children from Verde Park and the surrounding Garfield neighborhood are the beneficiaries of this free, interactive and hands-on learning initiative. Wildcat Night @ Verde Park, 916 E. Van Buren Street, debuts for the 2015-16 school year on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with a community celebration. In addition to the lessons provided by medical students, the event also features prizes, activity booths, a healthy fruit snack and a special appearance from Discovery Triangle’s Fresh Express mobile market, which offers affordable fresh fruit and vegetables – 50 percent off that evening. Additional Wildcat Night @ Verde Park evenings in 2015 are scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18 and Wednesday, Dec. 9. The November session will focus on the topic of heart and exercise, while the December Wildcat Night is a tour of the UA College of Medicine-Phoenix “Simulation Center.” Medical students have worked with youth from Verde Park and other nearby parks a dozen times over the past year, teaching a variety of lessons on health, nutrition and the importance of physical activity. During the 2014-15 school year, the medical students visited Verde Park four times to lead structured activities, two times led tours and interactive activities on the medical school campus and six times visited the park to play soccer and talk about health with children. More than 300 youth attended those 12 sessions. FitPHX is a citywide initiative, led by Mayor Greg Stanton, Vice Mayor Daniel T. Valenzuela and Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman, with the goal of improving health and wellness in the region and making the Phoenix area one of the healthiest in the nation. The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix admitted its inaugural class of first-year medical students in August 2007 and currently has 320 students training to be physicians.
