Nov. 9, 2015 The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department presents the 11th annual Phoenix Summit Challenge and URock Festival on Saturday, Nov. 14. This year’s hiking event, which will include 1,200 participants of all ages and ability levels, has reached it registration capacity, but the URock Festival, to be held at South Mountain Park/Preserve Activity Complex, is free and open to the general public. The festival is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the general public and will be open to Phoenix Summit Challenge participants only from 4 to 8 p.m. The URock Festival provides a great opportunity for outdoor recreation enthusiasts and families to learn more about trails and hiking throughout the city and region. The event, which uses the nation’s largest municipal park as a picturesque backdrop, will feature a variety of interactive displays, vendor booths, food trucks and live music, and also serve as a national tour stop for the REI Village. Additionally, the festival’s offerings will include guided petroglyph and nature hikes, exhibits featuring live birds and reptiles, and an opportunity to learn about the Arizona Trail, Maricopa Trail and the National Parks system. Phoenix Summit Challenge and URock Festival highlights the vastness, beauty and physical challenge that Phoenix’s unique mountain and desert preserves offer. This year’s participants will attempt to hike trails at Apache Wash (Vista and Ridgeback Overlook), Deem Hills, Piestewa Peak, Shaw Butte, Lookout Mountain and South Mountain’s Holbert Trail all in one single day. For more information, visit the Phoenix Summit Challenge website or Facebook page. This event is made possible thanks to the support of the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association, outdoor recreation outfitter REI, Bashas’ grocery store chain and Arizona Hiking Shack. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department reminds everyone to “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” Important hiking safety tips and checklist can be found by visiting the city’s Trails and Desert Preserves page.
