March 3, 2016 Phoenix residents can get moving at four parks starting the week of March 7, as part of the free, weekly WalkPHX program. The city’s FitPHX healthy-community initiative is piloting the 10-week activity – it’s “More than Just a Walk in the Park!” Residents can participate solo or with friends, family and neighbors from the week of March 7 through the week of May 9. Meet at the park’s WalkPHX sign on the following days and times: Encanto Park, 1202 W. Encanto Blvd. – 7 p.m. Tuesdays (park at Enchanted Island parking lot) Maryvale Park, 4420 N. 51st Ave. – 7 p.m. Tuesdays Eastlake Park – 1549 E. Jefferson St. – 7 p.m. Wednesdays Los Olivos Park – 2802 E. Devonshire Ave. – 7 p.m. Thursdays “FitPHX’s goal is to build one of the healthiest communities in the country,” Councilman Daniel Valenzuela said. “WalkPHX is activating neighborhood parks, and is yet another fantastic step in our continued effort to create a safe, connected, walkable community throughout our city.” The first 25 participants who attend at each site will receive a free FitPHX water bottle. Those who come to all 10 walks in the program earn WalkPHX t-shirts. The program is the next step in WalkPHX, which also has installed signs mapping the walking paths and mileage markers at 23 parks around the city. The Coca-Cola Foundation is sponsoring the WalkPHX pilot program through a grant to FitPHX. For more information and a map of WalkPHX parks, visit the WalkPHX website and click the walkphx.org link, where participants can register and track their walking mileage online. Additional WalkPHX partners who have sponsored signs and markers at parks around the city are Coca-Cola of Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Kohl’s Fit, the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, the Phoenix Parks Foundation, World Fit/UnitedHealthcare, Knight Transportation, Berry Realty, Desert Ridge Community Association, Tatum Highlands, Maricopa County Department of Public Health and the Arizona Nutrition Network.
