May 5, 2017 Councilman Michael Nowakowski invites residents to the 4th Annual “Star Spangled Celebration,” honoring our fallen police officers, fire fighters and military veterans from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Cesar Chavez Park, 7858 S. 35th Ave. (at Baseline Road). “This event is a tribute to the life-saving work our local first responders and those on active duty in our armed services do every day,” said Councilman Nowakowski, chairman of the City Council Public Safety and Veterans Subcommittee. “They put their lives on the line to ensure our safety, and we should celebrate that courage and dedication.” This free, family event includes a fireworks display at 8:30 p.m., a display of Show-n-Shine low rider cars, an Arizona Cardinals football toss, PHXTeens Mobile Recreational Sports Van, raffles, live music by the Str8Up Band, food and drinks for sale, water play area, city department information booths and inflatable bounce houses. The event also features a solemn candlelight ceremony where residents can light and release a floating candle into the park’s lake to support a loved one in law enforcement or military service. Visitors can also see Hero Lane when attending the Star Spangled Celebration, a tribute to fallen police officers and firefighters. There are two Hero Lanes, one along Baseline Road between 35th and 51st avenues and the other on Washington Street between 7th Street and 9th Avenue. The Hero Lanes will feature photos of the fallen on light poles along the roadways, which will be on display through July 6, 2017. The District 7 Council Office also created a website, phoenixheroes.org, dedicated to the 49 public safety personnel who have died in the line of service and to the thousands of United States military veterans who have lost their lives defending our freedom. The event is supported by presenting sponsor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, sponsors Withey Morris, Nestle Pure Life, Transdev, All City Towing, Phoenix IDA, the Laveen Community Council, Clear Channel Outdoor, Radio Campesina 88.3 FM, Presna Hispana, and community partners Super Embroidery and Screen Printing, Food City, and the Phoenix Parks & Recreation PHX Plays program.
