Arizona’s Children Association Presents Annual “Born to Thrive, Birth to Five” Conference

Theo nguồn tin trên mạng của Arizona’s Children Association Human Service Professionals and students are invited to join Arizona’s Children Association for a day of professional development, exploring how individuals can brighten the futures of Arizona’s children. The conference will focus on overviews of cutting edge trends and knowledge bases in the fields of child welfare, foster care, behavioral health and neurodevelopmental research.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) May 06, 2014

In recent years, scientific research and knowledge on the critically important educational window of opportunity that occurs in infancy has increased dramatically. With increased understanding of how our early development affects the growth and wellbeing of the individual, the area of Birth to Five research and clinical practice has steadily come into focus in the Human Services field. As the body of psychological research on early development continues to expand, translating and sharing that important information about infant brain development with Human Service professionals is critical to the foundation of learning and success in the field.

As an Arizona statewide leader on the challenges facing our families and the Birth to Five population, Arizona’s Children Association presents the Born To Thrive, Birth to Five Conference.

The intricacies of professional Human Service work with the Birth to Five population are complex; with issues ranging from developmental to sociological in nature. The conference will focus on overviews of cutting edge trends and knowledge bases in the fields of Child Welfare, Foster Care, Behavioral Health, and Neurodevelopmental Research and will attempt to answer many of the questions that Human Service Professionals have in regard to trends, background, research, and practical application of clinically appropriate service within the field.

At the event, attendees will have opportunities to learn from experts in the field. The conference will feature cofounder of New Directions Institute for Brain Development (NDI), Dr. Jill Stamm, as keynote speaker. Her presentation is titled: “Mindfulness in Parenting: Using Brain Science to Boost Our Skills.”

Dr. Stamm earned her doctorate in Learning from Arizona State University, where she is an associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychology in Education. She is an author and a national and international speaker on early brain development and the connection of healthy brain growth to later learning and school achievement. Dr. Stamm is a member of the National Advisory Panel of the Learning & the Brain Conference series and serves on the Governor’s Advisory Council for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM) and is on the Advisory Board for the Arizona Science Center’s exhibit on the brain. She has appeared on numerous television segments and is frequently quoted in child development articles in The Arizona Republic.

Conference sessions will be divided along three tracks. Among the noted session presenters include the FASD prevention bureau which will be presenting on the topic of substance exposed newborns for those who want to learn more about how substance exposure in utero can influence brain development. Marcia Stanton from Phoenix Children’s Hospital will share her knowledge of how adverse childhood experiences can be crucial in our understanding of trauma and its presentation in infants and toddlers. Sessions included in each track are:

Track 1: Trauma Informed Care for Birth-5

  • “Working With Parents of Trauma-Affected Children 0-5” – Richard Brubaker + Heidi Kaminski, Arizona’s Children Association
  • “Birth to Five Assessments” – Melissa Johnson + Tallona Dixon, Arizona’s Children Association
  • “Overcoming Adverse Childhood Experiences: Creating Hope for a Healthier Arizona” – Marcia Stanton, Phoenix Children’s Hospital
Track 2: Medical Integration for Children Birth-5
  • “Preventing and Assessing Prenatal Exposure to Alcohol and Other Drugs – Understanding the Effects on a Child’s Development” – Sara Rumann + Dianna Contreras, Arizona Department of Health Services
  • “Medication Management For 0-5 & Appropriate Alternatives” – Dr. Svetlana Sembrano, Arizona’s Children Association
  • “Integrating Primary Care with 0-5” – Dr. Julia Kelly, Maricopa Integrated Health Systems

  • “Foster Care Process for 0-5” – Ricky Dennis, Arizona’s Children Association

“We are excited to present this day of professional development to students and Human Service professionals,” said Arizona’s Children Association President and CEO Denise Ensdorff. “This opportunity will allow those in the field to share and gain new insights and information, helping us improve our work with the children and families we serve.”

City of Phoenix Housing Department Marks Fair Housing Month

Theo nguồn tin trên mạng của phoenix.gov April 24, 2014 The city of Phoenix Housing Department joins the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the nation in celebrating National Fair Housing Month. April is designated for everyone to celebrate the anniversary of the passing of the 1968 Fair Housing Act, which was enacted shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing and other housing-related transactions based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, familial status or sexual orientation. “This is a month that allows everyone to reflect on the great strides and advancements that have been made in our country, and to focus on future improvements that need to be made toward equal access and the opportunity to qualify for affordable housing regardless of one’s background,” said Councilwoman Kate Gallego, chairwoman of the Neighborhoods, Housing and Development Subcommittee. The Housing Department works to develop and promote open, strong and sustainable communities with a platform free of discrimination. This includes the ability for individuals to improve their quality of life by pursuing their dreams through equal opportunity and housing choices. “Our core values, vision and everything that we do surround fair housing. This means every housing program and service that we offer is open and welcoming to our diverse community. The spirit of this commitment is to the people of our community including future generations,” said Karl Matzinger, city of Phoenix interim Housing director. Discrimination in housing comes in all types and forms and many do not recognize they are subjects of discrimination. According to HUD, 2 million instances of housing discrimination are estimated to take place each year across the nation. Despite this, less than 2 percent of those instances are reported because renters and homebuyers do not fully understand what activities are illegal under the Fair Housing Act. Examples of discrimination under the Fair Housing Act include: Refusal to rent or sell housing Making housing unavailable Setting different terms, conditions or privileges for sale or rental of a property Providing different housing services or facilities Falsely denying housing is available for inspection, sale or rental Persuading owners to sell or rent their home for profit Denying access to, or membership, in a facility or service related to the sale of housing Advertising or making any statement that indicates a limitation or preference based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, familial status or sexual orientation The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity administers federal laws and establishes national policies that make sure all Americans have equal access to housing of their choice. Interested candidates can contact Maria Hargett at Maria.Hargett@DunkinBrands.com for additional information on the company’s growth plans for the market. Additionally, franchising executives from Baskin-Robbins will be at the Franchise & Business Opportunities Expo on May 3rd and 4th at the Phoenix Convention Center. To help fuel growth in Phoenix, special development incentives are available, which include reduced royalty fees for three years and up to $10,000 in local store marketing for stores that open on time*. As part of Baskin-Robbins’ growth plans, new franchisees who sign a development agreement in 2014 and timely open their shops can take advantage of significant offers, including 50% off of the 20-year initial franchise fee — a $12,500 value – and reduced royalties for the first five years, including the first year at 0% — a substantial savings from the standard royalty rate of 5.9%.** Furthermore, if the new franchisee signs a multi-unit agreement in 2014, he or she can receive the same incentives for each additional unit that timely opens. Baskin-Robbins has also introduced special incentives to help make business ownership a reality for U.S. military servicemen and women, including waiving the 20-year initial franchisee fee and offering a zero percent royalty rate for the first two years and reduced royalty rate years three through five for honorably discharged military veterans. WASHINGTON, April 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — American Legion officials met with a top Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) official in Washington on April 24 to address allegations made against the VA medical center in Phoenix, and how the department is responding to them. Specifically, CNN reported April 23 that the Phoenix facility has been keeping a secret list of patients long-overdue for medical exams, which has been linked to at least 40 preventable deaths at the facility. The report also said the list was kept secret to conceal appointment delays. Thomas G. Lynch, M.D., VA’s assistant deputy under secretary for health for clinical operations, responded to questions posed by Peter Gaytan, the Legion’s executive director; Jacob Gadd, the Legion’s deputy director for health; and other attendees. Lynch offered no useful answers. When asked about the Phoenix facility’s secret list, he said it was created because some VA employees didn’t use electronic wait-list software correctly. “Answers like that don’t increase our confidence that VA understands the terrible problems in Phoenix,” said Daniel M. Dellinger, the Legion’s national commander. “The fact that this secret list was maintained for quite some time, and that VA’s Central Office knew nothing about it, is bad enough. But for Dr. Lynch to mask it as some kind of human error with software is inexcusable.” On April 24, the Washington Free Beacon reported that the Phoenix facility’s director, Sharon Helman, received a $9,345 bonus last year, in addition to her base salary of $169,000. When Helman’s name came up at the meeting, it was explained that she had only been at her job for 18 months and, since her arrival, the current average wait-time for appointments at the VA facility had reportedly fallen to 55 days – down from more than 100 days, but still far from VA’s goal of 10-14 days. “Again, VA dodged the question,” Dellinger said. “Dr. Lynch needed to tell us why a VA administrator deserves any kind of bonus – or a job, for that matter – when she is the person who authorized the use of a secret list that is linked to the deaths of at least 40 patients.” According to internal emails obtained by CNN, Helman was aware of the secret list and even defended its use. Preventable deaths at the Phoenix VA facility and its secret list have caught the attention of Capitol Hill. Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake have asked the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs to conduct a hearing on allegations of patient neglect at the Phoenix medical center. The committee’s chair, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., responded on April 24, announcing that a hearing will be held after VA’s Office of Inspector General completes its own independent investigation, which is under way.
