Phoenix Residents Can Help Level the Playing Field for Students through School Tax Credit Dec. 19, 2017 Three of Phoenix’s 29 public school districts received half of all contributions in 2016. One school district received as little as $3 per student, while another received $135 per student. PHOENIX – Taxpayers looking to direct their year-end giving can make a difference with a dollar-for-dollar tax contribution to a Phoenix public school in need. Arizona law allows taxpayer donations to help fund after school programs and extracurricular activities—like band, sports, speech and debate, and field trips— but schools are not benefiting equally from these donations. Although tax credit contributions increased by 9 percent in 2016, the inequity still exists. In fact, last year, one Phoenix school district received as little as $3 per student, while another received $135 per student. “Until public schools receive the funding they need, Phoenix residents can help address inequity in our schools by making informed tax credit donations,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. “When we invest in our students and their futures, we also invest in the future economic success of our great city.” Data from the Arizona Department of Revenue, Office of Economic Research & Analysis shows that three out of 29 school districts in Phoenix received half of all contributions. It also shows that 20 percent of school districts received fewer donations than the previous year. After school programs and extracurricular activities may not be fully funded by school districts because of limited funding. With the help of donations received from the School Tax Credit Program, schools like Kenilworth School in the Phoenix Elementary School District #1, can send their students on field trips for free—at no cost to their families or any impact to the school’s funds. “In the absence of the Tax Credit donations, these opportunities would be very complicated to produce and would cost the families money out of pocket,” said Kenilworth School Principal Anthony Pietrangeli. “The tax credit donations have allowed us to maximize the number of students that participate because the financial burden is not on the families.” Arizona tax law (ARS 43-1089.01) allows taxpayers a tax credit of up to $200, or $400 per married couple, if they contribute to extracurricular activities in public schools. Arizona taxpayers may donate less than $200 and still be eligible to receive the state tax credit in the amount of their donation. Dec. 11, 2017 The city of Phoenix Youth and Education Office is now accepting applications for the 2018 Outstanding Young Man/Young Woman (OYMYW) of the Year awards. The OYMYW of the Year program recognizes and honors the outstanding achievements of young people, enhances the perception of youth and raises community awareness of the positive contributions of youth. This awards program is open to any students currently enrolled in high school in Phoenix or live within Phoenix city limits. Here’s how it works: One young man and one young woman will be selected as winners from each city council district and receive an award of $500. In addition, each district-level winner will be eligible for an additional $1,500 award if they are selected as the citywide winners. Students interested in applying will need to write an essay, submit a recommendation letter and proof of legal residence in the United States. News Release from Phoenix Councilman Sal DiCiccio – Phoenix Planning to Raise Taxes Again, Food Tax, Property Tax, Sales Tax – Or All Three Dec. 5, 2017 ​Phoenix – The City of Phoenix is facing an unprecedented financial crisis created by overspending and out-of-control pension costs – topics that were front and center once again at today’s City Council meeting where city professional staff laid out only two options to address the crisis that is already upon us: cut key services or raise taxes. “After today, it’s clear: Phoenix is planning on raising your taxes. Again,” said Councilman Sal DiCiccio. “I’ve been talking about this since 2010, and first the politicians here ignored the problem, then they claimed to fix it – clearly, they haven’t – and now they’re coming back to citizens for even more money.” This, despite the City taking in record-high revenues in recent years. Stanton should be front and center addressing this, and instead he’s running away, asking for a promotion. Danny Valenzuela and Kate Gallego spent years crowing about how they fixed this problem, but they knew even then that was a lie. If these people want to lead the City, they need a plan that doesn’t begin and end with a never-ending series of tax increases.” In fact, Councilwoman Gallego and Mayor Stanton are so afraid of the problems they have helped create that they even skipped the meeting. No one in this building cares how big a burden we place on our citizens, not when reducing those burdens means cutting their own benefits.” Instead of a massive tax increase, or reductions to key services, Councilman DiCiccio has proposed a far less burdensome solution: cease all light rail expansion. “We can get most of the way towards solving this problem, just by stopping the light rail expansion. Glendale already did it. They backed out of their part of the deal because it’s a giant waste of money. We’re going to spend billions of dollars – money we don’t have – for a service that almost no one uses.
