Pediatric Environmental Health Specialists Offer Strategies to Reduce Arsenic Exposure From Rice Consumption

A new article in The Journal of Pediatrics examines the potential for children and infants to be exposed to arsenic via consumption of common products containing rice. The authors recommend a diverse diet and provide a review of strategies to reduce exposure to arsenic in rice recommended by various sources..

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (PRWEB) OCTOBER 08, 2015 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialists at the University of California San Francisco PEHSU(Western States Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit) along with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley and Dartmouth have released a new report reviewing the risks of childhood exposure to arsenic through consumption of rice, and potential health consequences. Rice is an important staple grain for large segments of the population. Children who regularly consume large amounts of rice or rice products may be exposed to amounts of arsenic exceeding the maximum amounts allowable in public drinking water systems in the U.S. The amount of arsenic exposure from rice is not enough to produce acute symptoms. Chronic exposure to arsenic in high doses from water has been associated with increased risk for developing lung, bladder, and skin cancers, impaired intellectual development, diabetes, and other health problems. Although the levels of arsenic found in rice are lower than exposure levels in water known to produce such health risks, there is concern whether infants and children with a diet high in rice products are at risk. Children at particular risk for arsenic exposure include those that consume rice or rice products daily, those who consume a lot of rice as a cultural practice, or those with diets high in rice due to gluten-free requirements or to control allergens. “Clinicians should be aware that exposures to arsenic that children have from rice products (including those sweetened with brown rice syrup) may present a risk and that certain children have particularly high exposures due to dietary needs and preferences” states Dr. Mark Miller, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco and Director of the Western States PEHSU. The authors provide strategies to reduce arsenic exposure, including diversifying the diet of young people and encouraging the consumption of a variety of grains. Parents should consider alternates to rice when introducing food to infants by starting them on barley, oats or other grains. If rice cereal must be given to infants, parents are encouraged to limit rice to 1 serving per day. Additionally, families can adopt strategies to help minimize arsenic exposure, including rinsing rice in a colander prior to cooking, cooking rice with plenty of extra water, and choosing lower-arsenic varieties of rice (e.g. basmati). Parents should also limit the use of rice milk, or other rice beverages, for infants and children under 5 years of age. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to identify children at risk for high consumption of rice and rice products and counsel families on ways to decrease exposure in culturally sensitive ways when appropriate. The American College of Medical Toxicology manages the PEHSU National Office – Western Operations. The PEHSU Mission is to improve the health of children through enhancing educational and consultation services to clinicians, health professionals, and the community regarding environmental health concerns. _______________________________________________________________ About The American College of Medical Toxicology ACMT is a professional, non-profit association of physicians with recognized expertise in medical toxicology. Musical Instrument Museum to Host Special Exhibition "Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker" Opening Jan. 16

Phoenix Museum Will Welcome Treasures from the Master Violin Makers of Cremona, Italy

PHOENIX, Oct. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — This January the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix celebrates the violin. The internationally beloved instrument will be the star of a new exhibition that showcases 10 exceptional historic and modern examples from the string family, including a 1728 Stradivarius violin on public display for the first time in the United States. Opening Jan. 16, 2016, “Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” introduces the story of how early violin makers from the modest Italian city of Cremona shaped global music from the 16th century onward. MIM will explore how the workshops of the Amati, Guarneri and Stradivari families produced and perfected the look and sound of instruments in the string family. The exhibition will show why their legacy continues to inspire instrument makers and audiences today. Guests will hear and see the instruments on display through audio and video technology and will experience the violin as never before. MIM is the only location in the world hosting this one-of-a-kind exhibition. It will feature five historic instruments made from the 16th to the early 19th century by the so-called masters of Cremonese violin making. Additionally, five award-winning modern instruments from European and American makers represent the ongoing legacy of the Cremonese violin-making method. Highlights include: The “Carlo IX” violin, ca. 1566, by Andrea Amati – Andrea Amati is often referred to as the founding father of the violin. This is one of only around 20 of his instruments known to survive. This particular violin was made for King Charles IX of France, son of the powerful Catherine de’ Medici. The “Artôt-Alard” violin, ca. 1728, by Antonio Stradivari – As the most widely imitated violin maker, Stradivari arguably has the most familiar name among all instrument makers. The deep color tones and refined craftsmanship of this instrument represent the late-period work of this master. The “Prince Doria” violin, ca. 1734, by Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù” – Approximately 200 instruments by the maker known as “del Gesù” are known to survive. They are prized by musicians the world over and often fetch equal or higher prices on the auction block as those of Stradivari. In addition to instruments, the exhibition will feature a selection of tools and designs from the workshop of Antonio Stradivari. These precious artifacts are rarely on display outside of Cremona. “Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” is a collaboration between MIM and two Cremona-based institutions, the Museo del Violino and the Friends of Stradivari. “The name Stradivarius has, for good reasons, become synonymous with ‘the best’ in many contexts. This exhibition will give insight into the man and his world, including the master craftsmen who influenced him and his continued importance to modern violin makers and musicians,” said Kathleen Wiens, PhD, MIM’s curator for Europe. “The story of Stradivari has something for everyone, such as those with interests in music, design, craftsmanship, natural resources, science, lawsuits and fraud, or even the fascinating history of European royalty. Stradivarius is the ultimate human interest story.” Similar to exhibits in MIM’s permanent galleries, “Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” will include high-quality audiovisual content, such as musical performances from the concert stage, science experiments in progress and interviews that explore the unique nature of the musician-instrument relationship. The exhibition, which will be on display in MIM’s Target Gallery, runs from Jan. 16, 2016, through June 5, 2016. Information about supplemental programing, including special events, concerts at the MIM Music Theater and educational opportunities, will be announced in the coming months. Admission $10 for “Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” exhibition only $7 when purchased with general museum admission The Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix (corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just south of Loop 101). For general museum information and a full schedule of events, visit MIM.org or call 480.478.6000. About MIM The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) enriches the world by collecting, preserving and making accessible a wide variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. Grand Canyon University, MercyMe's Bart Millard Unveil Recording Studio To Develop Emerging Christian Music Talent

New building, high-tech equipment add to growing appeal of Worship Arts program

PHOENIX, Oct. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Grammy-nominated artist Bart Millard and Grand Canyon University unveiled a new state-of-the-art recording studio on the GCU campus that will serve as a vital tool in helping emerging Christian music talent hone their skills as artists. GCU and Millard, who is program director of the university’s Center for Worship Arts, will offer students a chance to evolve their skills by writing, performing and producing potentially chart-topping musical tracks. Last year, three freshmen teamed up with Millard to produce the Center’s first EP, Canyon Worship. The original song “Christ in Me” on the EP climbed as high as No. 37 on the iTunes Christian singles charts. With the introduction of the recording studio, the university’s label, also named Canyon Worship, will continue to produce and release tracks. “This recording studio gives our students a chance that very few schools provide: the opportunity to combine their faith and musical talents,” said GCU President Brian Mueller. “The Worship Arts program teaches them everything from songwriting and performing to production and lighting with a hands-on director in Bart Millard who is very engaged in the process. Unlike many programs that focus just on the music, Worship Arts is grounded in our College of Theology while also bringing in curriculum from the Colangelo College of Business and the College of Fine Arts and Production.” The recording studio includes a 1,466-square-foot space with four isolation booths that can accompany bands of any size, and a smaller 254-square-foot studio built to accommodate vocal overdubs, voiceovers, solo instruments and post-production editing. The 1,172-square-foot, high-tech central control room seats two at the console, and also allows up to 20 additional guests inside the control room during session playback and mix-down. “It’s one of the bigger studios I’ve seen in my career,” said Millard, who as the longtime lead singer for the popular Christian band MercyMe has spent thousands of hours in such venues. “There are bigger ones, but they’re rare. Most of them are cubbyholes, and most people are doing their songs in rooms that are about the size of broom closets.” In addition to a large collaboration area, where up to 50 aspiring musicians can work together to write lyrics or music, the studio includes three fully equipped band rehearsal spaces, which can accommodate up to eight musicians and their gear. Each space has an electronic drum kit, a personal monitoring system and recording computer for demos or keeping a record of musical ideas as they evolve during sessions. Additionally, the studio will be used to record voiceovers, undertake sound design for theater, conduct closed production work and develop music videos. There are also three offices for studio staff and a small conference room for up to 12 people. “I’m really excited about the songs that are going to be created out of this studio,” Millard said. “I’ve always said great songwriters write about what consumes their heart, and we’ll have a room full of students in this program who are grounded in Scripture and consumed with Jesus Christ.” Since its introduction last year, the Worship Arts program has experienced significant enrollment growth. Capabilities of the center, such as the recording studio and the affiliation with Millard, have increased enrollment by 170 percent over the past year, with 154 students enrolled. The bachelors program offers four emphases – digital media, worship production, worship management and worship ministry. “This program will produce songs that show up on Christian music charts, but it’s not just about creating national recording artists,” Mueller said. “It’s about earning a degree that is grounded in theology and helps prepare the next generation of worship leaders who will spread the Gospel in local churches and throughout the world.” ABOUT GCU: Grand Canyon University was founded in 1949 and is Arizona’s premier private Christian university. GCU is regionally accredited and emphasizes individual attention for both traditional undergraduate students and the working professional. GCU offers traditional programs on its growing campus, as well as online bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. The university’s curriculum fuses academic and clinical rigor with Christian values to prepare its students to be skilled, caring professionals. An extravagant dinner at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa will be served, then guests will experience a dancing competition at its’ finest. The participants will dance their routines surrounded by 50 tables of encouraging audience members. They will receive a score from the judges and an audience vote to determine the winners. One competitor will win for the best dance and one will win for the most money raised – because that’s what is the most important! In addition to the dance competition we will include specialty performance of several national and international dance competitor pairs, and an “all dance” fun event to culminate the evening. A limited number of tickets are still available for this event. Money raised will be used to aide in programs like the Stroke Camp, Hope Chimes choir and other rehabilitative support programs by Dignity Health Foundation.
