City of Phoenix Employees Reaching Out to Community During Cold Spell

Theo nguồn tin trang mạng của phoenix.gov As temperatures dip below freezing again tonight, City of Phoenix employees from the Police, Fire, Human Services, Water, Housing and other departments continue to keep a vigilant eye on the community. “As cold weather continues in Phoenix, it is important to keep the homeless and other vulnerable residents in our thoughts and prayers and to do everything we can to help those in need by keeping them safe and warm,” Mayor Greg Stanton said. “Thank you to our partners and Phoenix shelters for opening up more beds and providing more meals over the last several cold days. Thank you to Phoenix police for their compassionate outreach and providing blankets. Most importantly, thank you to community members who continue to volunteer their time.” Residents are encouraged to donate blankets, hats, gloves, coats, underwear and socks in children’s or adult sizes to the city’s Winter Respite program. Donated items, which are tax deductible, may be delivered to the Human Services Department, Phoenix City Hall, 200 W. Washington St., 18th floor, or any of the city’s three family services centers: Travis L. Williams, 4732 S. Central Ave.; John F. Long, 3454 N. 51st Ave.; and Sunnyslope, 914 W. Hatcher Road. “A donated jacket, shoes or blanket could literally save a life tonight,” said Councilman Daniel T. Valenzuela, chairman of the City Council Neighborhoods, Planning and Development, Housing and Homeless Subcommittee. “This is an opportunity for Phoenix residents to once again show how compassionate we are when it comes to helping people in need.” The donations are distributed to the community by outreach teams including Basic Mission, Catholic Charities, Church on the Street, Community Bridges, Healthcare for the Homeless, Home on the Way Ministries, Native American Connections Inc., Set Free Ministry, Son Lit Foundation, Southwest Behavioral Health PATH Outreach, Stand Up for Kids, TERROS, The Salvation Army/Project HOPE, Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development and US Vets. “These freezing temperatures not only impact the people living on our streets, but also the pets who are so often by their side,” said Councilwoman Thelda Williams, co-chair of the City Council’s Animal Cruelty Prevention Task Force. “I hope we all consider these four-legged friends when making our donations.” For more information about the Winter Respite program, contact Tim Cole, city of Phoenix homeless programs coordinator, at 602-534-5463 or tim.cole@phoenix.gov Media Contact: Toni Maccarone 602-495-5901 http://phoenix.gov/news/011413coldspell.html

Tips to Help Prevent Your Home Plumbing Lines From Freezing

Theo nguồn tin trang mạng của phoenix.gov In Phoenix, plumbing lines that travel from the property’s meter into the house and throughout the home are the responsibility of the homeowner. Low temperatures can cause the water in your private lines to freeze and break due to increased pressure, especially if the pipes are exposed or in an attic. Here are a few tips to help protect your home: When you think about covering your plants, think about how to protect your water pipes, too. Insulate all pipes that can be seen. Protect exposed outdoor pipes with some type of temporary insulation (towel, blanket, small rug, etc.) Know where your water shut off valve is located. A home’s main shut off valve usually is located near the front of the house, but may be located at the rear of the property, or in the basement. If a pipe breaks, turn off the water to your house using the main shut off valve and call a licensed plumber. Remove hoses from outdoor hose bibs. Close any indoor valves that supply water to outdoor hose bibs. Open outside valves to allow any remaining water in the pipe to expand without causing the pipe to break. Leave a cold water faucet dripping slightly, since moving water does not freeze. The cold water is still above freezing and will help prevent the pipe from freezing.

Partnerships Bring New Home to Family in Need of Decent, Affordable Housing

Theo nguồn tin trang mạng của phoenix.gov Jan. 8, 2013 Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona (HFHCAZ), in partnership with the city of Phoenix YouthBuild Program and Wells Fargo, is providing a Phoenix family with a new LEED Platinum certified home in 2013. The land for this home was donated by the city of Phoenix Neighborhood Stabilization Program; it was the site of a dilapidated, vacant and foreclosed house. Phoenix City Councilman Bill Gates, along with representatives from HFHCAZ and Wells Fargo, will host a “wall signing” ceremony for this home at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at 422 E. Las Palmaritas Drive, in Phoenix. “This is a great example of a project that really works for our community,” said Councilman Gates. “It encourages volunteerism, prepares low-income youth for the job market, promotes sustainability and opens the door to homeownership for a hardworking family. It’s a win for all.” This home on East Las Palmaritas Drive is being built for the Woldemariam/Balcha family, a family that had been looking for decent, affordable housing in Phoenix. Youth involved in the project learn about ‘green’ construction and giving back to the community. In addition, Wells Fargo volunteers are assisting with the home’s construction and improving the surrounding neighborhood. This home build also is supported by Green Building Partners, Bob Ramsey and Jenny Norton of the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation. Ramsey and Norton financed HFHCAZ’s first LEED Platinum Certified home in Glendale in 2008 and have continued to be strong supporters of Habitat’s green building efforts. Additionally, American Solar Electric will be donating a solar panel system for this project. The LEED Certified home complements a number of other neighborhood revitalization efforts that the Village Center area is undertaking with the community and the Neighborhood Services Department.
