Cronkite School, Arizona PBS Launch Crowdfunding Campaign to Expand Coverage of Immigration, Border

Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng của prweb.com PHOENIX (PRWEB) JANUARY 26, 2016 Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Arizona PBS today kick off a crowdfunding campaign to help Cronkite News students increase coverage of border and immigration issues during this election year. The Cronkite School is the first journalism program in the nation to establish a major partnership with Beacon, an innovative crowdfunding platform that helps national news organizations and independent journalists raise funds for reporting projects. The crowdfunding campaign will enable Cronkite News, the student-produced news division of Arizona PBS, to send students to the U.S.-Mexico border and enhance the reporting tools they can use to better understand immigration, security, the economy and other issues. “More than 15 million people live on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, and too often they are missing from news coverage,” said Cronkite School Dean Christopher Callahan. “We are excited to be partnering with Beacon on this project, which will equip our students with important reporting skills and provide borderlands news coverage during a year in which presidential candidates are debating these types of issues.” The 30-day crowdfunding campaign’s goal is $25,000. With every pledged dollar, Beacon will match donations if the campaign reaches its goal. People can pledge their support at the Cronkite News Beacon page. Student journalists will produce stories that bring to light diverse political insights and perspectives and explore new ways of storytelling, using cutting-edge media and technology. The initiative is part of Cronkite News – Borderlands, where students cover border issues in English and Spanish under the guidance of two award-winning professional borderlands journalists Alfredo Corchado and Angela Kocherga. As part of the crowdfunding campaign, the Cronkite School will offer rewards to donors based on their level of support. Those include thank you letters, insider reports from the CN-Borderlands bureau, as well as invitations to lectures and other events. The Cronkite School also will test and analyze which types of audiences are most likely to contribute and whether crowdfunding is a viable ongoing revenue source for student-based media. Cronkite News has received a $10,000 grant from the Institute of Nonprofit News to support this endeavor. Launched in 2013, Beacon works with journalists and readers to fund important stories around the world. Journalists create crowdfunding pages on Beacon, detailing the reporting project, and readers decide whether to make a contribution. Crowdfunding is becoming an important revenue source for news organizations, particularly non-profit newsrooms. “Crowdfunding for journalism works best when you combine an important issue with a trusted newsroom, willing to engage with its audience,” said Dan Fletcher, Beacon’s co-founder. “With those traits in mind, the Cronkite School is the perfect university to pioneer this project.”

Eight Maricopa Community Colleges Among Nation’s Top 150 Community Colleges

Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng của prweb.com TEMPE, AZ (PRWEB) JANUARY 27, 2016 Eight Maricopa Community Colleges were named among the Aspen Institute’s top 150 community colleges in the United States. The Institute made its announcement this week. The Maricopa Community Colleges are Phoenix College and Chandler-Gilbert, Estrella Mountain, Gateway, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale and South Mountain Community Colleges. A full list of the selected colleges and details on the selection process are available at http://www.aspenprize.org. “Having eight of our 10 colleges named to this prestigious list is a wonderful achievement,” said Maricopa Chancellor Rufus Glasper. “This is an indication of our colleges’ dedication to educational quality and student success.” The Prize, awarded every two years, is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, employment and earnings, and access and success for minority and low-income students. These top 150 colleges are eligible to compete for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million dollars in prize funds. Ten finalists will be named in fall 2016. The Aspen Institute will then conduct site visits to each of the finalists and collect additional quantitative data. A distinguished Prize Jury will select a grand prize winner and a few finalists with distinction in early 2017. Nearly half of America’s college students attend community college, with more than seven million students – youth and adult learners – working towards certificates and degrees in these institutions across the country. Maricopa colleges have been on the award list since it was first established in 2011. Estrella Mountain Community College is the only Arizona college to have been selected in all of the award’s four cycles. For the first time, the 150 Prize-eligible institutions are also invited to nominate exceptional students enrolled in their best middle-skill STEM programs for scholarships. Up to 50 Siemens Technical Scholars will be selected from programs that provide outstanding preparation for high-demand jobs in manufacturing, energy, health care, and information technology. Scholarship winners and the programs that deliver rigorous training enabling their success will be announced in fall 2016. All prize-winning community colleges were selected from a national pool of over 1,000 public two-year colleges using publicly available data on student outcomes in three areas: Performance (retention, graduation rates including transfers, and degrees and certificates per 100 full-time equivalent students) Improvement (awarded for steady improvement in each performance metric over time) Equity (evidence of strong completion outcomes for minority and low-income students)

Statewide FAFSA Workshops Throughout February Assist Families In Completing Financial Aid Applications

Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng của prweb.com PHOENIX, AZ (PRWEB) JANUARY 27, 2016 The Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education announces its 20th Annual Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) workshops. FAFSA completion workshops are hosted at more than 45 locations statewide. College and Community sites will host the February 13 and 14 events, while more than 25 high schools have signed on to host one or more workshops as a result of the positive turnout at several high school locations in 2015. The FASFA workshops are designed to give college-bound students and their families free, on-site assistance in completing the FAFSA, and provide information about available financial aid opportunities. A FAFSA is required to apply for all federal and state financial aid programs as well as many private-donor scholarships and work study programs. The mission of College Goal FAF$A is to increase the number of first-generation and under-served students entering postsecondary education. The goal is to provide awareness of the financial aid process, increase access to accurate and timely information regarding financial aid, as well as offer in-person events where students and families can get help to complete the FASFA. The Commission reports that 92% of students surveyed stated that the help received at a 2015 College Goal FAF$A event was worth the effort of attending and 89% of students surveyed stated that their participation in College Goal FAF$A 2015 increased the likelihood that they would enroll in college or vocational school in the next academic year. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 90 percent of students who complete the FAFSA application receive some form of federal aid to attending a postsecondary institution. In addition, a data analysis study performed by NerdWallet showed that in the state of Arizona 34 percent of the graduating class of 2013 did not complete the FAFSA, and left more than $75 million dollars of free federal grant money on the table. That works out to $3,478 per student – enough to cover a full year of classes at a local community college with money left over for books. “Completing the FAFSA early is the key to removing one of the most common barriers students face in going to college,” said Dr. April Osborn, Executive Director for the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education. “There is more than $150 billion of financial aid funding available and every student should be taking advantage of that. The FAFSA is the critical first step in applying for any type of assistance.” Financial aid professionals and community volunteers will help students and families complete the FAFSA during the February 13 and 14 event. These workshops will be held from 2 – 4 p.m. at a variety of locations spanning the state including sites in: Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, Tucson, Prescott, Nogales, Yuma and more. High school workshops will also be held statewide, at various times and dates throughout January, February and March. A full list of locations, dates, times and information of what attending families will need to bring – identification, financial information, etc. – can be found at: https://collegegoal.az.gov/college-goal-fafsa. About Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education The Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education’s mission is to expand access to and to increase success in postsecondary education. 1000 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza Opens First Arizona Location in Phoenix

Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng của prweb.com PHOENIX, ARIZONA (PRWEB) JANUARY 28, 2016 1000 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza, a fast-casual American spin on authentic, hand-tossed Neapolitan pizza, is debuting in Arizona with the opening of its Phoenix location on Sunday, January 31. The new restaurant is located at 7000 East Mayo Boulevard, Suite 1002, in the 101 and Scottsdale Shopping Center. To celebrate the new restaurant, the first 10 guests through the doors on Sunday, January 31 at 11 a.m. will win free pizza for a year. In addition, all guests who visit the grand opening between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. and like 1000 Degrees on Facebook, follow on Instagram or Twitter, will receive a 10” pizza of their choice at no-cost. 1000 Degrees serves personalized, made-to-order authentic Neapolitan pizza. Each pizza starts with fresh, never frozen, hand-tossed dough, created with authentic Neapolitan “00” flour and available in both a personal 10” and shareable 14” sizes. Guests then choose to create their own pizza or order one of the 1000 Degrees Favorites. The Phoenix 1000 Degrees is the first location in Arizona and will be operated by Randy and Ban Kassab of Capital Pizza Ventures. The group plans to develop three total locations throughout Arizona, with the next scheduled to open in Gilbert this spring. “We saw Phoenix as a relatively untapped market for fast-casual, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza,” said Randy Kassab. “We’re looking forward to opening our doors and sharing our love for pizza with the community.” Customizing a 1000 Degrees pizza is truly a unique experience, as guests can choose to top theirs with any of the more than 50 high quality cheeses, sauces, meats, vegetables and other toppings all for one flat price. While choosing their toppings, customers are guided down an assembly line of pizza consultants to create a pizza that is totally unique to them. Outside of the build your own option, there are more than 12 varieties of specialty pizzas including favorites like The Smokey Pollo, also known as Barbecue Bourbon Chicken, which features sweet and smokey bourbon barbecue sauce, roasted chicken, red onion, pineapple, shredded Grande brand mozzarella and blue cheeses, and The Philly, which is a cheese steak pizza topped with thinly sliced rib-eye, caramelized Spanish onions, balsamic glaze, shredded Grande brand mozzarella and provolone cheeses. Pizzas are then fired to perfection at 1000 degrees in a custom, handmade, revolving Neapolitan brick oven in just two minutes. “1000 Degrees is on fire and we’re certainly heating up metro Phoenix with the opening of our first Arizona location,” said 1000 Degrees CEO and Founder Brian Petruzzi. “I’m confident that we serve the best hand-tossed Neapolitan pizza in the area and provide an unparalleled customer experience that will keep people coming back for more.” Unlike traditional Neapolitan pizza which has a slightly undercooked center and requires a fork and knife to eat, 1000 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza has fused this classic style with American flare. The result is a thin crust pizza that maintains the light and airy appeal of a Neapolitan style pizza. 1000 Degrees pizza captures American appeal and old world Neapolitan flavor. The company currently has more than 10 domestic restaurants open and one international location in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 1000 Degrees is growing at a rapid pace, estimating it will open more than 80 units by the end of 2016, and projecting an additional 170 units by 2017. 1000 Degrees in Phoenix is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. To learn more about 1000 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza or to be part of its daily free pizza contests, please visit http://www.facebook.com/1000DegreesPizzaPhoenix/?fref=ts or call (480) 502-7735. Theo nguồn tin trên trang mạng PRNewswire PONTARIO, Calif., Jan. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Phoenix Motorcars LLC., a manufacturer of electric vehicles for the fleet market, continues its rapid growth by accepting an order for 50 of its Zero Emissions Utility Shuttle (ZEUS) buses from WallyPark, Joe’s Airport Parking and Joe’s Auto Parks, all subsidiaries of the L&R Group of Companies and leaders in the airport shuttle bus industry. The 14-passenger fully electric buses will be used to service airport parking at Los Angeles International, San Diego International, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, three of the nation’s busiest hubs. Each of the buses is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 tons of carbon dioxide per year as compared with a conventional diesel shuttle, Phoenix says. All 50 buses will have fast-charging capability, which allows full charging to take place in less than than three hours. In addition, the vehicles “we provide our clients with sizable savings in fueling and maintenance costs, making us a great solution for our customers,” said Phoenix president Steven Davis. “Phoenix is excited to partner with L&R on electrifying over 50 buses across the US, a significant commitment to cleaning the air around our airports. ABOUT PHOENIX POLICE FOUNDATION The Phoenix Police Foundation was established in 2002 with the intent to gain community support for unmet police adepartment capital needs, and provide financial assistance for department employees and their families in times of crises. Many cities throughout the United States – including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose and Houston – have robust police foundations that fill a significant funding gap between the city’s funding and the community’s needs. Our hope is that the Phoenix Police Foundation mirrors the impact of these other comparable cities. During the past 12 years the Foundation has provided emergency assistance for dozens of individuals facing personal tragedies, funding for technology needs for the department, officers’ equipment and other various initiatives that help the Phoenix Police Department in its efforts to keep America’s sixth-largest city as safe as possible. Although these donations have made various impacts, they are minimal considering the vast size and scope of our city, and the dramatic need that exists. ABOUT DAVID GERGEN David Gergen, CDT and President of Pro Player Health Alliance, has been a nationally respected dental lab technician for over 25 years. He received the award for “The Finest Orthodontic Technician in the Country” given by Columbus Dental in 1986.
