'Paint Phoenix Purple' to Fight Domestic Violence in October

Theo nguồn tin trên mạng của phoenix.gov Sept. 30, 2013 Paint Phoenix Purple Logo for News ReleasesBeginning Oct. 1 and throughout the month, the city of Phoenix will ‘Paint Phoenix Purple’ in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Because the city is committed to becoming a national leader in preventing and responding to domestic violence, city departments will help raise awareness about the need to end domestic violence. Some examples include: Installing purple lights on Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights Turning the lights purple at the top of Phoenix City Hall Making the lighting crystals purple on Third Street between Washington and Monroe streets at the Convention Center Installing purple lights on trees along Washington Street in downtown Phoenix Painting a section of the street purple on First Street between Adams and Monroe streets Installing ‘Paint Phoenix Purple’ posters on 30 city of Phoenix garbage trucks Placing ‘Paint Phoenix Purple’ magnets on some city vehicles including fleets from Streets, Human Services, Neighborhood Services, Water, Police and Fire departments Airing a one-hour special program on PHX11 about domestic violence “I hope this display of purple during October serves as a reminder that stopping domestic violence is a priority for our community,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “We must be vigilant about maintaining the effort year-round by continuing to invest real resources to fight domestic violence, including better training for police officers allowing them to detect signs of abuse when responding to calls.” Residents also can show their support for this first-ever campaign with displays of purple. People can install a purple light bulb on their porch, wear purple clothing on Fridays, tie a purple ribbon on their car antennas, etc. Displaying purple throughout the community sends a strong message that there is no place for domestic violence in the workplace, homes, neighborhoods or schools. “Domestic violence impacts us all because it may be happening to our friends, family members and coworkers,” said Councilman Daniel T. Valenzuela, chairman of the City Council Neighborhoods, Housing and Development Subcommittee. “I am pleased to be one voice of many during this year’s ‘Paint Phoenix Purple’ campaign, bringing this issue into the light as we continue to create communitywide solutions to end the cycle of violence.” Together, the community can raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on families. Statistics show that one in four women and one in five teens in Arizona will experience domestic or dating violence in their lifetime. The Paint Phoenix Purple campaign is sponsored by the city of Phoenix, O’Connor House and the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130919/DC82700-INFO ) (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110428/DC91889LOGO ) According to the 2012 American Community Survey, the median household income in the Phoenix metro area was $51,359 in 2012, which was not statistically different from $50,869 in 2011. In addition, 17.4 percent of people in the Phoenix area were in poverty in 2012, unchanged from 2011. (Table CP03) The American Community Survey provides a wide range of important statistics about all communities in the country — including the Phoenix area. The American Community Survey gives communities the current information they need to plan investments and services. Retailers, homebuilders, police departments, and town and city planners are among the many private- and public-sector decision makers who count on these annual results. The survey is the only source of local statistics for most of the 40 topics it covers, such as educational attainment, housing, employment, commuting, language spoken at home, nativity, ancestry and selected monthly homeowner costs. Other selected highlights for the Phoenix metro area (compared with all U.S. metro areas): Education In 2012, 33.9 percent of 3- and 4-year-olds were enrolled in school, which was not statistically different from 31.5 percent in 2011. Nationally, 48.7 percent of 3- and 4-year-olds living in metro areas were enrolled in school in 2012, which was not statistically different from 48.4 percent in 2011. (Table S1401 2012 |2011) Among the Phoenix area’s 25-and-older population, 86.3 percent had completed high school or more in 2012, unchanged from 2011. Among all U.S. metro areas, 86.7 percent were high school graduates or higher, an increase from 86.3 percent in 2011. The 2011 rate for the area was not statistically different from the rate for all U.S. metro areas. (Table CP02) Meanwhile, 29.2 percent of the Phoenix area’s 25-and-older population had a bachelor’s degree or higher in 2012, an increase from 28.5 percent in 2011. Nationally, 31.2 percent had a bachelor’s degree in 2012, up from 30.6 percent in 2011. (Table CP02) Housing In 2012, the median value for an owner-occupied home in the Phoenix metro area was $156,100, not statistically different from $155,600 in 2011. Across all U.S. metro areas, homes had a median value of $188,300 in 2012, a decrease from $191,000 in 2011. (Table CP04) In 2012, the median gross rent (rent plus utilities) was $936, an increase from $908 in 2011. Renters in metro areas across the U.S. paid $925 in 2012, not statistically different from $927 in 2011. (Table CP04) Foreign-Born Population About 14.3 percent of Phoenix area residents were foreign-born in 2012, which was not statistically different from 14.5 percent in 2011. Among all U.S. metro areas, 14.8 percent of the population was foreign-born, not statistically different from 14.7 percent in 2011. The 2011 rate for the Phoenix area was not statistically different from the 2011 rate for all U.S. metro areas. (Table CP02) For More Information In addition to these statistics, the Census Bureau has released a set of analytical briefs with American Community Survey statistics on income, poverty and health insurance coverage for states and metro areas. More information about the Phoenix area and the nation’s social, economic and housing characteristics can be found on the Census Bureau’s American FactFinder website. The 2012 American Community Survey statistics are available for the nation, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, every congressional district, every metro area, and all counties and places with populations of 65,000 or more. (Note that statistics for metro areas based on the Office of Management and Budget’s statistical area delineations issued in February 2013 will be available with the release of the 2013 American Community Survey results next year.) Statistics for areas with smaller populations will be available later this year. Note: Unless otherwise noted, local-to-national and year-to-year comparisons are statistically different. The median household income and gross rent figures are in 2012 inflation-adjusted dollars.
