Phoenix Partners with Cigna to Offer Free Water Safety Education April 18, 2019 ​For the 27th year, the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and Cigna Healthcare of Arizona will partner during summer 2019 to provide free water safety education programs for children ages 17 and younger and discounted water aerobics classes for seniors. Registration for the Cigna Summer programs opens on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. Register by visiting the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department Aquatics page. Cigna Summer programs include: Cub Club (ages seven to 10) Discovery Guards (ages 11 to 13) Junior Lifeguard Training (ages 14 and 15) Lifeguard Academy (ages 15 to 17) Discounted Water Aerobics (ages 50 and older) Cub Club – Youth ages seven to 10 learn basic water safety skills from a lifeguard mentor, including assisting in a water emergency, when to call 911 and basic swimming instructions. Boating and personal flotation device skills will also be taught using a boat. Participants meet twice a week for five weeks. Discovery Guards is available at all 29 of Phoenix’s public pools. The program starts the week of June 10 and concludes at the Cub Club/Discovery Guard Olympics on Friday, July 12 from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at Encanto Pool. Junior Lifeguard Training – Youth ages 14 and 15 will learn lifeguarding techniques, first aid and will be trained in CPR. Leadership and responsibility are emphasized, as well as community contribution with volunteer hours at the pool. Successful completion of the Junior Lifeguard program reduces the cost of Lifeguard Training. Participants meet three to four times a week for six weeks. Junior Lifeguard Training is available at all 29 of Phoenix’s public pools. The discounted cost is $5 for a 35-minute class (full price is $15) and $7.50 for a 60-minute class (full price is $22.50). Early Voting Begins on Wednesday April 23, 2019 Early voting for the May 21 City of Phoenix Runoff Election begins on April 24, and mail-in ballots for the election will be mailed out that same day. The election is being conducted by the Phoenix City Clerk’s Office. Residents in District 5 will vote to fill its vacated Council seat for a term that expires April 19, 2021, while residents in District 8 will vote to fill its vacated Council seat for a term that expires April 17, 2023. Mail-in ballots will be sent to voters on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) and those who requested an early mail-in ballot. Voters who are not already scheduled to receive a ballot by mail can request an early ballot by mail by submitting a signed, written request to the City Clerk Department. Request forms are available at Phoenix.gov/Elections, at City public service counters and libraries, or by calling the City Clerk Department at 602-261-VOTE (8683) or by using the 7-1-1 Relay System.
