Top Market Highlights Orlando The Orlando housing market continues to make substantial strides in its recovery. Metro employment is up 4.1 percent year-over-year, supported in large part by its booming leisure/hospitality sector that comprises over 21 percent of local employment. Payrolls are at an all-time high some 27 percent above their prior peak. Home prices jumped 4.4 percent this past quarter, eclipsing $200,000 for the first time since 2008. Up 11.2 percent year-over-year, home prices have outpaced US annual growth for 20 straight quarters, with room for additional growth as prices remain 17.3 percent below their prior peak. Population growth has exceeded two percent for four consecutive years, and Orlando’s economic outlook is among the best in the nation. Palm Beach County Palm Beach is seeing healthy progress in its housing recovery, though economic growth has markedly decelerated in 2016. Year-over-year employment growth is at 1.5 percent, the lowest annual rate since 2011 and down from the three to five percent growth the metro has enjoyed for most of the recovery. Home sales are at a high level, however, some 24 percent below their bubble peak, indicating plenty of room for further growth. Seasonally adjusted prices are approaching $270,000 and are at their highest level since 2007, though they remain 11.6 percent below their prior peak. This suggests room for further growth. Single-family homes in the metro offer great affordability and are cheaper than local apartment rentals, which should preserve demand for buying and allow for additional price gains. With permit activity still hovering at a low level, overbuilding is far from a concern and Palm Beach’s housing market remains solid. Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale’s housing market continues to thrive in its lengthy recovery from the housing bust. With metro employment up 3.4 percent year-over-year, the local manufacturing and transportation/utilities sectors sustained vigorous growth throughout 2016. Leisure/hospitality jobs, a mainstay of the local economy, continue to reach new heights. Home sales are still some 26 percent below their pre-bust peak, largely seeing choppy progress despite contracting this past quarter, and home prices have risen 8.8 percent over the past year to a cyclical high of nearly $245,000. Though annual home price growth has outpaced the US since 2011, prices remain 16.2 percent below their prior peak, leaving additional room for gains. Fort Lauderdale’s population growth doubled that of the US at 1.4 percent in 2015, and continued growth should support the housing market’s ongoing recovery. Tampa Tampa’s housing market is marching ahead on its road to recovery, thanks to an economy that continues to enjoy strong job growth and strengthening demographics. Despite cooling over the past few months, total employment stands 2.6 percent higher than its year-ago level, with job gains in 32 of the past 34 months. Tampa’s largest sector, professional/business services, has seen its explosive growth slow in the past year, though payrolls are up 4.6 percent year-over-year. Home prices reached a cyclical high of almost $180,000 and are up 10.7 percent year-over-year, continuing the torrid pace that has outstripped US annual growth since late 2011. Meanwhile, prices are very affordable in the metro and 12.3 percent below their prior peak, suggesting further room for gains. Accelerating population growth combined with a robust economy should fuel Tampa’s housing market going forward. Dallas Dallas continues to see vigorous growth, notwithstanding the drop in oil prices that are threatening some other Texas metros. Driven largely by the professional/business services sector, payrolls are up 3.8 percent from last year and the city has added jobs in 44 of the last 45 months. Recent job losses in the manufacturing sector have been slight compared to the rest of the state, keeping unemployment at a low 3.6 percent. Single-family prices are up 9.9 percent from a year ago, reaching an all-time high of more than $215,000. Though prices have risen for 19 consecutive quarters and are well above their prior peak, single-family homes remain affordable in the metro, indicating that further price gains are sustainable. Dallas’ population growth in 2015 was almost triple the US average, which bodes well for the future. “The US economic expansion is continuing despite turbulence abroad,” said Ten-X Chief Economist Peter Muoio. “The labor market in particular remains a bright spot, adding an average of 180,000 jobs per month this year. US home sales have bounced around at a high level throughout 2016 because of tight inventories, resulting in a zig-zag pattern of sales that has persisted. Orkin’s bed bug revenue is up more than 10 percent over last year. “We have more people affected by bed bugs in the United States now than ever before,” says Orkin Entomologist and Director of Technical Services Ron Harrison, Ph.D., adding that bed bugs are a growing issue. “They were virtually unheard of in the U.S. 10 years ago,” he says. According to a 2015 “Bugs without Borders Survey” by the National Pest Management Association, nearly all (99.6 percent) of pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the past year, up from five, 10 and 15 years ago. Bed bugs are great hitchhikers because they travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings. Bed bugs can be found anywhere, from single family homes, apartments and hotel, to public places like movie theaters, public transit and libraries and offices. “Anyone can get bed bugs in their home. They are not a sign of uncleanliness. Bed bugs only need blood to survive. We have treated for bed bugs in everything from million dollar homes to public housing,” Harrison says. Bed bugs can be difficult to detect and treat because of their small size and ability to survive up to a year without feeding. They are about the size of an apple seed when fully grown, and can hide around seams of a mattress, behind headboards and in cracks and crevices, usually within a five-foot radius of the bed. The first signs of a bed bug infestation are often the bed bugs themselves or small dark stains bed bugs can leave behind. “People may have bed bugs and not know it, because many people have no physical reaction to bed bug bites,” Harrison says. “That’s why it’s important for people everywhere to inspect for bed bugs regularly.” While the 50 metro areas listed above required the most treatments for bed bugs in 2016, Orkin has treated for bed bugs in all 50 states and around the world. To help detect and prevent bed bugs, Orkin recommends homeowners and travelers do the following: At Home: Inspect your home for signs of bed bugs regularly. Check locations where bed bugs hide during the day, including mattress seams and behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets and picture frames. “I like to inspect every week when I change the sheets to make sure I don’t have a visitor,” Harrison says. Decrease clutter around your home to make bed bug inspections and detection much easier. Inspect all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home. During travel, remember the acronym S.L.E.E.P to inspect for bed bugs: Survey the hotel room for signs of an infestation. Look for black or brown spots on any furniture. Lift and look in bed bug hiding spots: the mattress, box spring, bedskirt and other furniture, as well as behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper. Elevate luggage away from the bed and wall. The safest place is in the bathroom. Examine your luggage while repacking and once you return home from a trip. Place all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage in the dryer for at least 15 minutes at the highest setting after you return home. PHOENIX, AZ (PRWEB) JANUARY 01, 2017 Local cooperative Arizona Federal Credit Union issued a $5 million payout to its members on December 31, 2016, as part of its promise to share excess capital with active members when the credit union performs well. Through this program, called PLUs – or Payback for Loyalty to Us – the Phoenix-based credit union has paid out more than $24 million to active members since 2012. “As a credit union, we’re not owned by a group of investors sitting back and waiting for us to make them money; we’re owned by our members,” explains Ronald L. PHOENIX, Dec. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona is looking for the next great kid chef to create a delicious and healthy side dish recipe. Finalists will sample their culinary creations at a Phoenix Suns home game and win great prizes. For the seventh consecutive year, the company is on the hunt for original, great-tasting and kid-inspired side dish recipes for the Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge. The program’s goal is to motivate Arizona’s youngest culinary masterminds to incorporate healthy options into their daily food choices. Children ages 9–12, living anywhere in the state of Arizona, are encouraged to submit their healthy and tasty side dish creations for a chance to win a new bike. Finalists will also have an opportunity to prepare and share their masterpiece at a Phoenix Suns home game. “The Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge is one of the best ways to impress upon kids that nutrition-rich ingredients can also be great tasting,” said Myrna Collins, health promotion executive, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. “Year after year we are inspired and impressed with the delicious side dish recipes our budding chefs create, and we can’t wait to see what this year’s participants bring.” Contestants can submit recipes anytime between Jan. 1–25, 2017. Recipes must be: An original recipe for a hot or cold side dish Include at least one fruit and/or vegetable Be able to be cooked within 20 minutes (not including prep time) The top five recipes will be selected based on nutritional value, taste and originality. Finalists will be invited to present their creations at a Phoenix Suns home game Feb. 10 at the Talking Stick Resort Arena.
