This year’s hiking event, which will include 1,200 participants of all ages and ability levels, has reached it registration capacity, but the URock Festival, to be held at South Mountain Park/Preserve Activity Complex, is free and open to the general public. The festival is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the general public and will be open to Phoenix Summit Challenge participants only from 4 to 8 p.m. The URock Festival provides a great opportunity for outdoor recreation enthusiasts and families to learn more about trails and hiking throughout the city and region. The event, which uses the nation’s largest municipal park as a picturesque backdrop, will feature a variety of interactive displays, vendor booths, food trucks and live music, and also serve as a national tour stop for the REI Village. Additionally, the festival’s offerings will include guided petroglyph and nature hikes, exhibits featuring live birds and reptiles, and an opportunity to learn about the Arizona Trail, Maricopa Trail and the National Parks system. Phoenix Summit Challenge and URock Festival highlights the vastness, beauty and physical challenge that Phoenix’s unique mountain and desert preserves offer. This year’s participants will attempt to hike trails at Apache Wash (Vista and Ridgeback Overlook), Deem Hills, Piestewa Peak, Shaw Butte, Lookout Mountain and South Mountain’s Holbert Trail all in one single day. FitPHX Meet Me Downtown Birthday Bash Set for Nov. 9

Nov. 3, 2015 ​The free, weekly FitPHX Meet Me Downtown Phoenix (MMDT) walk/run will celebrate its first birthday on Monday, Nov. 9, from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. at The Corner restaurant at CityScape Phoenix. Many special activities are planned along the 3.2-mile route that takes participants through three downtown parks and past numerous businesses, restaurants and landmarks. Participants check in each week at The Corner restaurant before heading out to tour the downtown cityscape. A “MMDTPHX” hand stamp provides identification for Monday evening discounts at more than 20 participating restaurants and businesses. Passionate regulars and first-time eventgoers at the Nov. 9 event will be supported by two dozen MMDT volunteers, city and Downtown Phoenix Inc. Nov. 3, 2015 Burton Barr Central Library will exhibit a collection of artwork created by artist Paul Nosa, “Drawing with a Sewing Machine,” Nov. 6, 2015 – Jan. 11, 2016 at the library’s @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave. An opening reception with the artist will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. The reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library. A local artist, Nosa creates non-traditional drawings using his Solar Sewing Rover — a portable sewing machine powered by a solar panel or a bicycle with an electric generator. Nosa travels the country to demonstrate the Solar Sewing Rover and the importance of renewable energy. He is known for creating “drawings” inspired by audience driven word associations on small patches of fabric at public events. His large-scale sewn artworks will be featured in the exhibition.
