Dedication of Hatcher Road Public Art Project

April 9, 2015 A new public art project created as part of the Hatcher Road Improvement will be dedicated during the Sunnyslope Art Walk at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11. District 3 Councilman Bill Gates and local community leaders will attend the project dedication. The project consists of two sculptures by artist Gordon Huether. Made of stainless steel and dichroic glass, which refracts sunlight into rainbow colors, the landmarks stand at the east and west ends of the three-block improvement on Hatcher Road, from Central Avenue to Third Street. In addition to the two sculptures, the streetscape improvements include sidewalk and landscape enhancements to improve the pedestrian environment. Huether drew inspiration for the works from the shape of prickly pear cactus paddles and the iconic “S” displayed on the side of North Mountain in Sunnyslope. He combined these elements to create the two 6-foot tall sculptures mounted on large slabs of native stone. Each sculpture is made of two layers of half-inch waterjet-cut stainless steel. Small dichroic glass circles are randomly placed throughout the surfaces to capture and refract light into colors that change as you move past the works. The stone used for the sculpture was quarried not far from the Hatcher Road site in North Phoenix. The project was commissioned by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture Public Art Program with percent-for-the-art funds from the Phoenix Street and Neighborhood Services capital improvement programs. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2015, the Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission was established by the Phoenix City Council in 1985 to advance the growth and development of the city’s arts and cultural community. New Book ‘Sitting in the Flames’ Presents Cathartic Journey to Self-Awareness

Haunted by memories of the Vietnam War, Dr. John Edwin DeVore relates his inner journey towards healing, true-self.

Mesa, Ariz. (PRWEB) March 31, 2015

“We all have an artist within waiting to be unleashed to create the life we desire,” said Dr. John Edwin DeVore. Recalling some inspiring words that he read, he goes on to say that, “Our scars tell us about our past; they do not dictate life as we intend it to be.”

Immersed in the contemplative learning environment of Naropa University, Dr. DeVore had the opportunity to revisit the mental and emotional chaos and confusion associated with two years of combat during the Vietnam War. He wrote “Sitting in the Flames” (published by Xlibris) as a form of therapy. Here, he pens an experiential autobiography created following two years of combat during the Vietnam War, coupled with priceless support in re-visiting the emotional and mental chaos of a treasured experience helping the Vietnamese people. Although painful, at times, this book also has many reflections and lessons about fear, ignorance and anger that illuminates the path for an inner journey to uncover and witness one’s true self.

A review by New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh states: “In clear, heartfelt prose, DeVore describes a brave and unflinching confrontation with his past, made necessary in order for him to have a more meaningful life. War, he realized, isn’t just one man’s experience-it’s a sum total experience of an entire country. To stop wars, he argues, we must understand them and why we seem to need them.”

In sharing a captivating journey towards self-awareness as a war veteran fights his inner battles, “Sitting in the Flames” is not just another war story. It is a poignant expression of the paradox of the myth of war and the experience of war that also serves to illuminate how one may transcend their mental and emotional trauma by sitting in silence and solitude with their personal wars.
