July 18, 2014 Original news release below distributed by the NFIB and shared by Councilman Sal DiCiccio: PHOENIX, Ariz., July 17, 2014—In an e-newsletter to its more than 330,000 members nationwide today, including 7,000 in Arizona, the National Federation of Independent Business, America’s voice of small business, ranked Phoenix as one of the top five cities in the country “Opening Their Doors to Small Business.” “Phoenix’s rebounding economy, favorable climate and entrepreneurial culture attracts many transplanted residents,” said the NFIB article. “Two years ago, the Phoenix City Council implemented reforms that shifted a significant portion of city permitting and inspection functions to the private sector and created 24-hour turnarounds for projects such as city and building permits that used to take four to six months. With quicker turnarounds, doing business in Phoenix has become faster and more convenient.” Noted Farrell Quinlan, NFIB’s Arizona state director, “The majority of people starting small businesses and prospering here were born somewhere else. That kind of new blood and vitality means opportunities in Phoenix aren’t encumbered by an old-boys network.” In a news release issued by Mayor Greg Stanton, he said, “This ranking is a testament to the actions we’re taking to lift small and local businesses. We’re moving in a new economic direction – one that creates real opportunity for business owners and entrepreneurs.” City Councilman Sal DiCiccio added, “This puts Phoenix in a position to compete in the global economy, making us faster, smarter and better than our competitor cities. Getting 24-hour permitting and the ability to submit plans online allows businesses to open today, not months from now. The Mayor and Council recognized that it grows our economy faster when we help businesses take off quickly.” DiCiccio, a longtime NFIB member, led the 125-member Ad Hoc Development Task Force that produced the reform recommendations for how to streamline the city’s permit process. Phoenix has also been helped by a better state climate, Quinlan pointed out. “The state has been a leader in low tax rates and regulatory reform. For instance, House Bill 2013 simplifies the process state agencies must follow when creating rules and regulations they impose on Arizona businesses. That leadership ensures government serves as a facilitator of economic dynamism rather than a frustrator of job creation.” Other cities making the top five list were Caspar, Wyoming; Jackson, Mississippi; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Orlando, Florida. Beginning July 20, ESPN will highlight four sports wishes granted by Make-A-Wish®.
Phoenix (PRWEB) July 18, 2014
In order to reach elite status, athletes must possess not only natural talent, but also the ability to persevere through challenges and overcome adversity. So, it’s no wonder that wish kids often look up to world-class athletes as their role models. Wish kids – who are dealing with their own, much more threatening obstacles – gain hope and strength from watching their favorite superstars excel. For the ninth consecutive year, ESPN® will showcase the power of the sports wishes that Make-A-Wish® grants through the “My Wish” series on SportsCenter.
This year’s series begins on the morning of Sunday, July 20, and continues throughout the week. Each day until Thursday, July 24, ESPN will highlight a different wish for a child with a life-threatening medical condition. Viewers will be treated to wishes that feature the following wish-granters: Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton, Boston Red Sox’s Dustin Pedroia, the University of Michigan football team and USA Olympic team gymnast Gabby Douglas. The series will once again be hosted by Emmy Award-winning reporter, Chris Connelly.
“Athletes have been given the rare opportunity to truly make a difference,” said Chris Connelly, who has interviewed over 50 wish kids and their parents over the course of the series. “By helping grant their one true wish, the athletes are empowering wish kids to keep a positive outlook and continue to battle for their health.”
“The ‘My Wish’ series allows sports fans to witness the transformational power of a wish,” said David Williams, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. “Some people familiar with Make-A-Wish may not realize that for many wish kids, a wish-come-true can be a life-altering experience that forever changes everyone involved.”
In addition to the four new sports wishes being showcased, a special compilation of the wishes will be shown on SportsCenter later in the week. Each feature will also be accessible at ESPN.com following its original air date.

ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH®

Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illness, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Headquartered in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world's leading children's charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 38 minutes. Act Now. Claims must be filed by August 1, 2014.
PHOENIX, July 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following is being released by Kinsella Media on behalf of the DRAM Settlement Fund by order of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Time is running out for Arizona consumers to file a claim in the $310 million DRAM Settlement. The Settlement involves 12 Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) manufacturers over claims of price fixing. Consumers and businesses can file a claim if their purchases were between 1998 and 2002. DRAM is a high density, low cost per bit, memory component that stores digital information and provides high-speed retrieval of data. DRAM is sold separately or pre-installed in electronic devices such as computers (laptops, desktops, and servers), graphics cards, video game consoles, MP3 players, printers, PDAs, DVD players, and Digital Video Recorders. Purchasers of large amounts of DRAM or DRAM products could get $1,000s depending on the amount of product purchased. The minimum payment for smaller purchases of DRAM or DRAM products is expected to be $10. But the actual payment amount depends on the total number of claims filed and payments could be $25, $50 or more. Class Counsel Tracy Kirkham says, “Time is running out to participate in the DRAM settlement. The deadline to file a claim is August 1. The Settlement affects almost every consumer and business in Arizona that purchased computers and other electronic devices from 1998 to 2002. We encourage everyone to file a claim to get what is owed to them.” Claims can be filed online at www.DRAMClaims.com in five minutes or less. No proof of purchase is required to submit a claim. The deadline to file claims is August 1, 2014. July 15, 2014 Are you interested in learning how the city fights back against graffiti and how you can make a difference in those efforts? Have you ever been curious about the different types of graffiti you may see in your neighborhood and the meaning behind it? Now’s your chance as the city offers two free workshops to tackle and learn more about the history and types of graffiti found in Phoenix. Mark your calendars for the following: • Power Washer Certification: The city’s Neighborhood Services Department is rolling out another tool to help fight against graffiti. A power washer has been outfitted on a trailer, which can be checked out by those certified in its use and who have the proper insurance to pull a trailer behind their vehicle. This is a great new opportunity for residents to help eliminate graffiti in their neighborhoods. The power washer works best on graffiti that is on or covers an untreated surface such as block fences, sidewalks, etc. Come see what the power washer can do and get certified to use this new tool. The workshop starts at 7 p.m. Monday, July 21, at NSD West Facility, 3325 W. Flower St. • Graffiti 101: Join Phoenix Police Graffiti Detective Tim Reese for a free workshop to discuss and learn the history of graffiti, links between graffiti and crime, the penalties associated with graffiti, resources for removal, and much more. The workshop is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Mountain View Police Precinct, 2075 E. Maryland Ave. For more information or to register for one or both of the workshops, call 602-534-4444, email neighborhood.college@phoenix.gov or visit phoenix.gov/nsd/neighborhoodcollege.
